The Year 1 Friendship Tree
Something amazing has occurred in the Year 1 shared area: a magical, mysterious tree has appeared.
The students gathered beneath it to discuss the arrival of the friendship tree and what the friendship tree may need to help it grow healthy and strong.
The students decided on
A sprinkling of Kindness
A large scoop of Sharing
A little bit of Love
A large splash of Caring
Handfuls of Help
Plenty of Respect
And lots of Fun
To help the tree grow even more, the students reflected on their own behavior and that of their friends. They wrote special friendship leaves using the sentence prompts:
"I am a good friend because ...."
"___ is a good friend because ...."
These leaves were then added to the tree, nurturing it with their thoughtful reflections and strengthening the magic of friendship in our Year 1 community.
Growing Happy & Healthy
Year 1 Set Well-Being Goals
Our Year 1 students have been inquiring into how people’s relationships with others contribute to their well-being in our second UOI under the transdisciplinary theme
‘Who We Are’.
After investigating safe, healthy, and supportive environments. They reflected thoughtfully on their own lives—thinking about what makes them feel happy, safe, healthy, and supported. Through guided discussions and activities, the students considered their daily habits, feelings, and relationships with others.
Building on this reflection, the children set simple, safe, and healthy goals for themselves. These goals included things like not running under the roof, drinking water after playing, facing forward when walking, eating more fruits and vegetables, getting plenty of rest, and being kind to friends.
By setting these personal goals, the students learned how small choices can help them grow strong and feel good every day.
This process encouraged the Year 1 students to take ownership of their well-being and understand that caring for themselves is an important part of a happy and healthy life.
What simple goal will you set today to help you feel happy, safe, healthy, and supported?
