A pint seems like a small amount. A pint of water can vanquish your thirst, a pint of paint can cover your wall. To many patients in South Tangerang’s hospitals, a pint is what determines life and death. South Tangerang has seen a shortage of blood supply for many months now. Public and private hospitals are seeking help from various organizations to supply them with blood. When Global Jaya’s students heard about this, they did what had to be done. In cooperation with the Indonesian Red Cross, students, parents, teachers, and staff participated in a student-run blood drive last October.
The event started at 9 in the morning. One by one, people gathered in the backstage of the Theater, registering to give their blood. They were then thoroughly checked to make sure their health meets the blood donor qualifications. As they waited for their names to be called, first-time donors anxiously listened to veteran donors recount their first donation and why they did it. When it was time for them to clench their fists and brace for that needle, everyone around them cheered on. Many enjoyed the company of other donors going through the same experience as they were. After the short 10 minute procedure, they celebrated their contribution by taking selfies with what they had given: their red pints of blood. After a quick snack and a cup of tea, they headed back to their normal lives knowing they did something good that day.
The event was organized by four Year 12 students, Faris, Jason, Rafi, and Zeeva, with the help of Ibu Widy. They planned in collaboration with the Indonesian Red Cross a month in advance. The Red Cross provided the medical equipment, procedure, and chemical waste cleanup while the students organized the venue, timing, and rounded up donors. This isn’t the first time the school has worked with the Red Cross. Last year, a similar blood drive was hosted in school. Will this be an annual event?
The event turned out to be a great success. With the high volunteer turnout and the efficient, seamless process, topped with great collaboration with the Indonesian Red Cross, an annual Global Jaya blood drive isn’t that far fetched. What we can definitely say is that this event is a great start.
