On Tuesday, February 25th, 2025, students had their Energy Science Fair, in which they showcased their learning for Unit 4 under the transdisciplinary theme “How The World Works.” We had booths set up where the students could teach their parents and other children about all they had learned about the different types of energy, how that energy can be transferred in order to problem solve, and the scientific method. For this unit, students showed agency by researching energy transfer experiments, choosing one they were interested in, researching the science behind the experiment, conducting the experiment, and reflecting on all that they had learned. All of this followed a scientific method They showed great understanding about the different forms of energy and how people can harness and transform them.
Students from across the primary as well as the Year 3 parents attended and showed their support for our learning journey. Students were able to synthesize information, practice their presentation skills, and demonstrate their newfound scientific knowledge. It was a terrific success, and we thank everyone who attended!
For the provocation activity for unit 5 on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025, students watched a film called “The Croods”. Provocation activities are designed to spark interest in the students toward our next unit of inquiry. This unit of inquiry is under the transdisciplinary theme “Where We Are In Place And Time,” and it looks at migration through a historical lens. In the movie, a family is forced to leave their home and migrate due to unforeseen and irrevocable circumstances. We then answered reflection questions regarding the provocation and had an in-depth class discussion about why we showed the movie and what we hoped students would take away from it. We hope that students might consider reasons for migration in the modern world and in our past and think about the impact that the migration of people has had, and does have, on our world today.
