It has been a challenging year, but great challenges often bring great rewards. I will reflect on these past several months as a year of challenges overcome through dedication, flexibility, and teamwork, not just as a year of challenges. Thank you to the entire GJS community for your commitment and dedication to learning this school year. I say it all the time, but I say it all the time because I mean it: I am honored to be your principal. This week we celebrated learning through the Global Jaya Awards, achievement and progress through Year 12 Graduation, and community through Hawks’ Fest. It has been a wonderful week and reminder of how fortunate I am to be a part of this community.
Final reports will be published at 12:00 on 10 June, which we hope will be cause for more celebration as you head into the holiday. As a school, we will celebrate academic achievement for the 2021-2022 school year in Year Level Meetings (YLM) at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. We shifted the focus of academic awards from a whole school assembly to YLMs for a number of reasons, among them:
a recognized need for assemblies with a greater focus on all aspects of an IB education,
honoring academic achievement in a more intimate and familiar setting than the theatre,
a need to revamp the academic awards structure.
Given that reports were not finalized by teachers until 16:00 yesterday and will not be distributed until after 12:00 today, there was no time to hold the YLM academic awards this school year. This is why we will distribute academic awards in YLMs at the start of the next academic year. We will also post the results in the student bulletin. This approach has the added benefit of starting the next school year off with a strong focus on academic achievement.
On behalf of the entire Secondary school, I wish you all a happy, restful and healthy end of year holiday. I look forward to seeing you all on campus again in August.
