In our final unit of inquiry for the year, Year 2 has been exploring how people use various media to express and communicate messages. Read on to see details of some of our exciting learning experiences.
To start our storytelling journey, Year 2 explored different types of books such as picture books, books without words, pop-up books and touch-and-feel books. We discovered that all books have similar narrative elements, like characters, setting and plot, but that different book types have special things that make them stand apart from others. After our discovery stage, we tried to create our own simple book. Check out some of our awesome creations!
Khalifa created a book without words.
Young Han created a pop-up book
Gia created a picture book with writing
Above and Below: Chelsea, Haruka, Laim, and Alisha created touch-and-feel books.
Anyone that has ever watched a movie or listened to a song will tell you that sound can be used creatively to tell a story. But how can we create these different sounds using everyday materials?
Year 2 used the scientific method to answer this question. After making our own hypotheses, we tapped on glasses with different amounts of water, and determined how to make low pitched and high pitched sounds. We recorded our observations and came to a conclusion. Finally, we used our scientific discovery to create unique music with our musical glasses.
Learning doesn’t just happen by listening to our teachers. It comes from speaking and working with so many people, like our parents, our friends, and others in our community. We were lucky enough during this unit to have TWO guests visit us and share their storytelling knowledge and skills with us.
First, Ibu Anik came to share her puppet show about the elephant and the dog. By using stuffed animals, silly voices and interesting beats with the help of Pak Aji, she was able to make her story come alive. She helped us think of ways we can make our stories more interesting to watch and listen to.
Then, Ibu Diana led us in some fun physical theatre and mime activities. These silly activities helped us move our bodies, get comfortable performing in front of others, and explore the use of movement and facial expressions to make our performances exciting.
In the final week of school this year, Year 2 will take everything they have learned and experienced around storytelling, and will use it to create their very own stories. They will be able to choose any story-telling medium to express themselves and communicate their message. We are so excited to see what amazing stories they create!
