Year 7 Advisors' Corner
As the HBL ran throughout the year, the year 7 students had their own experiences of this new way of learning; from having fun with the class using jamboard, doing their homework by themselves and supported by teachers and parents, and needing to demonstrate perseverance to overcome the many HBL challenges along the way. The flexibility provided by HBL somewhat affords students with the opportunity to set their own learning pace in order to promote and maintain wellbeing during the learning process.
As IB students, HBL has presented many opportunities for students to strengthen several of the learner profile attributes. For example, students have had to be brave and take risks with new ways of learning. The autonomy that HBL provides students with, supports students to develop as thinkers as they make choices about how to use the pomodoro technique to manage their time. The school’s focus on balance and wellbeing has helped students to learn about how to become more caring by thinking about how to care for themselves.
As we begin to move towards blended learning and the return to campus, students will continue to grow through the adversity that significant changes can often bring. As was the case in HBL, student success will be best achieved through communication and collaboration between the student, parents and the school team.
We are excited to see what year 7 will bring.

My Experience as a Year 7 Student During HBL
Anika Alijana Siahaan 7B
This academic year was a special one since we got to undergo Home Based Learning all year long. Year 7 is my first year of MYP, which made it even more significant. Even though I didn’t see it would happen this way, I’m glad it did. I ended up having opportunities I could have never had if we didn’t do Home Based Learning. With them, I got to improve myself both academically and non-academically.
Initially, I had thought that Home-Based Learning would negatively impact my transition process into MYP. But instead, it helped it even more. Academically, I have improved and enjoyed the process of learning amongst all subjects. Because I was still shifting from PYP to MYP, I was introduced to new subjects, such as design and IS. But I learned that I had to accept and gain knowledge to familiarize myself with a new subject. In these two subjects, Design and IS, I did assignments and projects that I never thought I could do. In Design, I made a digital magazine as well as a digital design portfolio. And in IS, I did many research papers, presentations, and GRASPS assignments. Overall in academics, I have also improved in my grades and created my own goals.

Non-academically, I have improved my character as an IB student according to the IB learner profile attributes. The main skill, in my opinion, that I have improved, is "communicator." I have learned to maintain good communication in HBL since it requires me to do so verbally, and it may be harder to do so online. Another attribute I have developed is "reflective." I have improved on this because I learned to look back on my past mistakes and create goals to improve them. Other attributes apply to my improvement this academic year, but those two are the main ones. An advantage of HBL is that I become more focused since there are not many distractions or people around me. However, the downside is that without effort, I won’t have any social interaction. But overall, I think I have significantly improved non-academically.
In conclusion, throughout Year 7 HBL, I had the chance to improve my academic performance and non-academic performance as an IB student and adjust to all aspects of MYP. Hopefully, things will get better for the pandemic next academic year, but in the meantime, I will make the most of learning at home.
