I feel very fortunate to be working with the year 10 advisory teachers this year, Pak Jon, Pak Agung, Ibu Mel, and Ibu Ria have consistently demonstrated high dedication by always prioritizing students' interests, being wise listeners and discussing solutions with love as part of a solid family. As a result, ideas, suggestions, critical thinking, and a warm, cheerful atmosphere are always revealed every morning during the morning advisory. The substantial cooperation and mutual support this year have given me a lot of pride and learning experiences, which has meant a lot to my professional growth.
HBL has challenged the year 10 students to be more resilient. In being more resilient, students needed to develop an understanding of themselves; their weaknesses and strengths as well as an understanding of what they need in order to be academically successful. We learned together that good communication between students, teachers, advisory teachers and parents is essential in order to secure academic progress in the face of adversity. I am very proud to have accompanied the year ten students as they have strived for success throughout their HBL journey. This year ten cohort have certainly demonstrated that they are strong, adaptable and creative solution seekers.
The collaboration between the students, parents, teachers and alumni has clearly illustrated that GJS is a big family. Just like any family, the care, communication and support is what has helped us to begin to emerge through onto the other side of an extremely challenging situation.
We look forward to seeing our family back in school very soon.

Our current Year 10 students are in the final weeks of the MYP. To help them prepare for the transition to DP, the Science department teachers designed and implemented a 2-week induction program covering all 4 Science subjects, with the aim of bringing more understanding to our current Year 10 students about the program they are about to embark on. Year 12 students were invited back to join our Year 10 classes to share their experiences, tips, and tricks on how to make the transition as smooth as possible as well as how to get the most of the DP in Science and in general. Below are some reflections on the induction from our current Y10 students.

The next step from the Middle Years Programme (MYP) to the Diploma Programme (DP) is very uncertain and challenging. Looking at the subjects that I will take in DP doubts my choices and whether or not I will regret the subject choices I have selected. For the last 2 weeks, the year 12 students were kind enough to share their experiences about the Science subject they took. In each Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, there were one or two students that explained their experiences and what to expect in each of the subjects. I found them very informative and intriguing to hear the diverse viewpoints on their studies. They all briefly described life in DP, the tasks after tasks. Moreover, they gave us advice on how to avoid burnout, take lots of notes, and stay motivated. The Biology session convinced me unequivocally that I will study Biology SL in DP.

Although we've been given the DP Starter Package document which allowed us to see what each subject consists of, the Year 10 Sciences induction really helped me understand the expectations for each class more thoroughly. Being able to listen to students who have done (and survived) the courses talk about their experiences allowed me to visualize what it may feel like to be one of those students. They also provided tips, and answers to the questions we had, and was very helpful through it all. I personally am highly considering taking Biology next year, so the session for that particular subject was especially helpful for me. Now I know I've got to learn and properly understand the syllabus, and try my best to not get left behind. I've also heard some of my friends who were still torn between two potential subjects say that the induction sessions helped them choose which one they wanted to focus on, as they now know the requirements for each class. So, the induction really did help all sorts of students in all sorts of situations, which is great!

During the last week of school, we had some year 12 students visit our google meets to talk about their experience with different Science subjects in the DP. As we had several speakers for each Bio, Chem, Physics, and ESS, we got to really see what each DP Science is like. I found it really helpful, as I was still rather conflicted between taking Bio or Chem SL, but through hearing their stories on the assessments, the differences between SL and HL, and for the ones who took double sciences, which they enjoyed more, I was better informed on the pros and cons of the two subjects, and became more firm with my decision. They also shared tips on how to study and the resources they used, which honestly is so valuable, and beyond that, they shared tips for DP as a whole. Like what to expect, how to manage time, choosing the right subjects, and most importantly how that relates to university, in terms of the requirements for their chosen major. Overall, it was a great experience, hearing from students who already went through what we are about to go through.

The science induction for year 10 was really informative and a lot of the upperclassmen provided tips that were very useful for us to keep in mind. It helped clear doubts and questions that some of us had in mind and it helped me know what I should choose for my DP science class. The upperclassmen also explained everything thoroughly and I left the class with more answers than questions so it was really beneficial to me.

The DP science induction was very informative and helpful. We received a full information of the syllabus and materials, giving us the bigger picture of the course. With the upperclassmen coming in to explain the course and the learning experience of it through the lens of a student, we can understand more of the practical tricks and tips in understanding the course better. The induction allows space for us year 10’s to ask further questions on the subject and understand what each science course is related to in university majors.

The induction for the four science subjects for year 10 was very helpful. We were able to get a glimpse of what studying for those subjects would be like. We were introduced to the syllabus, topics that are going to be covered, assessments, etc. There were also a few upperclassmen who were joining us in the induction session to share their experiences studying the subject and providing us with tips and guides on how to succeed in those subjects. The sessions were very beneficial and helped many of us to not only decide which subject to take but also whether or not to take the standard level or the higher level for the particular subject.

For the Class of 2023, the DP Science Induction has been resourceful and preparative. Course overviews and subject syllabuses offered by our teachers gave a deeper insight into what topics, assessments, and emotions await us behind each door. However, above everything else, the induction has been realistic and reassuring. It felt encouraging viewing the Group 4 experience through the eyes of our seniors, as they openly spoke about the highs and lows of each subject, followed by a handful of wholesome advice that kept them motivated during their rough days. Their genuine stories not only entertained our doubts, but also gave us hope (and warnings) for the anticipated school year. Ultimately, the induction taught us to view the whole ordeal as a process. Yes, the Group 4 subject choice is not one to be taken lightly, but at the end of the day, it will just be another tessera forming the complete mosaic of our IBDP journey.
