Year 8 Advisors Corner’s
Morning advisory is a great way to start the day as we check in on one another. On Mondays, we have an attendance question that prompts the students to talk about their positive weekend experiences for the most part. On other days, the attendance prompts vary from funny to reflective. Each student has a day where they share a motivational quote or joke. The schedule was prepared by our two class monitors - Zariq and Gwynnie. We also use advisory to check the student bulletin announcements, check on important tasks for the day as well as take attendance. Fri-Yay has been a lot of fun because the class has been so cooperative. We have brought our pets to class, shared our favourite songs and contributed to the school community in various ways. (Ibu Christine-Year 8A Advisor)
Our morning advisory starts every morning at 7:30 am to 7:40 am and usually starts with a music clip prior to the start of the session and while waiting for the students to arrive. We use both verbal and written communication, using a padlet wall as a check-in question or meeting chat box. (Pak Ali-Year 8B Advisor)
We use our ten minute advisory time to check in with each individual student on a variety of topics from their thoughts/feelings, topics such as technology related issues, school work etc. We often share fun facts with each other. We close the ten minute check in with reminders about deadlines coming up that day. (Pak Santosa-Year 8C Advisor)
During advisory we do morning check-ins, often with students answering questions. I then ask students to open their G-mail to see if they have any emails from teachers. Various students then run through any work that needs to be done on that day or the following days. Students also use this time to fill in various forms etc from the school. We also use the time to chat about what is happening in their lives - we have talked about how to stay motivated and shared study methods with one another. On Fri-Yay!, we have had events such as ‘bring your Pet to school’ where students tell us about their pets. We have also played online games together, to help build community. Student Experiences:
For this school year we started our learning experience with home based learning (HBL). My experience during this HBL was that it was easier for me to organize my time, due to more time to finish work after school. The daily reminders and check-ins during advisory have helped me to finish tasks, meet deadlines and find ways to help us relieve our stress.
Although in HBL we are not able to connect with our friends in person, we still have many different platforms to connect with each other. During our weekly Fri-Yay! there have been many activities to bond us, such as watching movies and playing games such as ‘two truths and a lie’.
During HBL I have been able to take breaks from my screen between classes.I have also learned new ways to cope with my stress.
So far, HBL learning has been a new experience and even though it does not feel like normal school it still feels like we are learning together and bonding together as a community. (Najwa Mayra Aridya 8C)
During this semester’s HBL, I have experienced connections and bonds between students and teachers that are honestly completely unexpected, especially since we are social distancing. Despite only seeing each other through our limited laptop screens, we have still been able to form bonds together by doing certain activities together. During Advisory and Fri-yay!, my class was able to arrange games with the teachers and play together to make sure that everyone has a great time in the class.
This just goes to show that despite not being able to see each other in person, we are still able to bond and have fun together as a class and even as an entire year level. (Emir Rajendra Surjono 8D)
