Dinner is better when we eat together.
Last week we asked students to make connections to the story, Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey, by having them document a family dinner that they helped prepare. We wanted students to make applications to group potential and how they can contribute to their family group.
It was amazing to see the feasts they prepared and the care that went into the planning by our students and their families. Mission accomplished! 🥰
Everyone has different role!
Students are learning about how we belong to different groups and one of those groups is our school community! Earlier this week we listened to a story about how a family can be considered more than just our relatives. Family comes in many forms like friends, teachers, classmates, and other people who we are close to or who help us 👨👨👧👧👨👩👧👩🏽🤝👨🏾👩👦👩🏾💻🧑🏽🏫
Our awesome school community members volunteered to be in our videos and we shared these videos with our classes. In these videos, our GJS family shared their roles at home and at school. We learned that our principal, Ibu Elena, is also a daughter, an aunt, and a sister. We learned our gardener keeps our campus healthy and clean and is a dad who has responsibilities at home.
Students then made connections to gratitude and how to give appreciation by creating “Thank You” messages for our school family members. They listened to, have You Filled a Bucket Today? In their Indonesian Studies lesson (Civics) and shared ways they can help people who are family to them.
Guest Speakers came to our Class!
Under the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are, Reception students have been exploring the Central Idea: Who people are in relation to others and their surroundings.
We are learning that we are part of a larger community, and we can use our potential to do something good for the community that we belong to. Students have been inquiring about how individuals contribute to the potential of the school, their family, and the wider community.
Reception Teachers invited parents via Google Form to participate in our lesson on Wednesday, November 18th, taking on the role of guest speaker.
Making Connections Through Music
During Week 3, we learned a new song from South Kalimantan, entitled Ampar - Ampar Pisang. This song tells the story of bananas that are processed by being spread out and dried in the sun. Children sing this song as a companion to a game. Reception students played the game with a grown-up at home and shared their movements with the class. They played the game by moving their hands with another person. In this game, they learned to play focus games and exercises to build attention.
Do It Yourself - Magnetic Water
Who doesn’t love exploring magnets? We all do and Reception students as well. We had an engaging experiment, we created our own magnetic water. The materials were pretty simple, only iron powder, baby oil, water and a bottle. We did this synchronously as a whole class. Our magnetic water was so attractive that we couldn’t take our eyes off of it. If you want to know more about our magnetic water, watch the videos below!
The Raindrop Story
Last week in Bahasa Indonesia, we watched a story about a raindrop. When the story finished, we retold the story and created a cloud and raindrop. We used the cloud and raindrop craft as a way to make our retelling story interesting.
Visual Art
This Semester, Reception students have responded to various art forms and had fun creating many artworks using different kinds of tools and techniques. They practised responding to artwork by making connections to their own experiences, expressing their opinion or by talking about the form of the artwork. With guidance, they explored a variety of tools and materials to create visual art forms through drawing, painting and model making. They showed good self-management skills when using the tools properly and became problem solvers during the process.
