In this UOI we are learning about traditional stories, how stories are made, fractured fairy tales and much, much more. This unit is also focusing on communication and stories are a pretty good way of communicating ideas.
We are also learning about fractured fairy tales. Fracturing fairy tales is a process of taking any fairy tale and turn it into something new, like my story of Jake and the Beanstalk.
In my Jake and the Beanstalk story, I changed the perspective from the people to the giants and I made a new character. The new characters name was Jake and he is mentioned in the title, and another new character James who was Jack’s father. I changed the story a little bit, by saying James stole hard earned money from the giants. The money was from the markets for selling spices. I was being a thinker when I was making this because I thought a lot about this story and what to change and what to keep and it got me thinking a lot about how stories are made.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Anka from Year 5B. Today I am going to share the Year 5 experience during the Independence Day activities we did that happened on Friday, August 18th 2022.
What we did
In the morning, we did upacara on the tennis court. The students that were in choir sang Indonesia Raya, Hari Merdeka and Indonesia Pusaka. After break time, we had Independece Day - Primary assembly. Each class sang or danced the Indonesian traditional songs or dances. The Year 5 students sang Lir Ilir, which is a traditional song from East Java. We were being risk takers because we learned the song from such a limited time. Some students were also playing instruments.
After the assembly ended, the Year 5 students gathered at the soccerfield to do some activities. The first activity was called Fax Machine. We were split into different groups. We had to guess the shape correctly to win. In this activity, we had to work together and we also had to focus so we knew the shape drawn on our back by our friends. Then we did Crossing the River. We had to go to the other side using only 2 pieces of cardboard. In this activity, we were open minded and thinkers because we have to think how to go to the end and we also had to listen to our teammates for ideas. The last activity was Marble Racing. Everyone in each group had a spoon. Each group had 1 marble. Our objective was to bring the marble to our teammate using the spoon (relay). If the marble fell, we had to retry. In this activity, we had to be focused so the marble wouldn’t drop and we didn’t have to start again.
How we felt during the Activities
Everyone felt happy and also excited to do the activities. It wasn’t only because the activities were fun but also because everyone showed integrity. No one cheated in the activities.
The Alice in Wonderland play was performed on the 26th of August in the Global Jaya theater. It was created by the Year 5 students to showcase what they have learned from this UOI.
I was chosen as the director of this play and I’m very grateful for that. This assembly is a very impressive result of the work of Year 5 students and their amazing teamwork!
The year 5 agreed to choose the theme of the play/assembly as Alice in Wonderland. Raisya, Nabila, and myself (Almeera) were chosen as the script writers to modify the Alice in Wonderland story. We were also in charge of the casting.
Jaeyden Kaeya Van Rooij (Alice) was casted as the main character, Alice because she has the correct accent and appearance. None of us regret casting her as Alice as we all have seen her outstanding performance, she was also great at memorizing her lines which is perfect since Alice has a lot of lines!
Katherine Victoria Penner was Red Queen because she is perfect for the red queen role, she could display the correct emotions that have to be played for the role of the Red Queen.
Nabila Aufa Azzahra was Younger Alice/Narrator because she has a good storyteller voice and was a good fit to be ‘Younger Alice’.
As the script writers, me and Nabila (who are writing the article right now) were very happy with the result of the assembly. We are all proud of year 5, as they were controlling the lights and sound effects, too!
The teachers helped supervise us and gave us advice on what to do and how we should act. They also helped us with the props! I would like to thank the teachers backstage for helping out with the lighting team.
I would love to say that the assembly was perfect, but in truth we really could have done better. We were AMAZING on stage! But we definitely had room for improvement. In the future, I want us to look back on this assembly and reflect on our mistakes and move forward.
