The Year 1 students have started the year off with an exploration into organising systems, rules and routines in our first unit of inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, with the central idea: Communities make efforts to create systems that meet their needs.
Guest speakers play an important role in developing our students’ research skills as they are primary sources of information, with whom our students can listen to and ask questions. They also assist the students in building essential connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the real world.
Pak Husni & Pak Kevin: The students listened to a presentation by our head of security, Pak Husni, about rules at school. During the presentation, the students identified a variety of rules at school, why those rules are important, what happens if we break the school rules and the people who enforce the rules at school.
Family Members: The students interviewed their own family members about rules and routines at home; they then uploaded a short video about what they had discovered onto Seesaw. The students were guided by the following questions:
1. What are the rules at home?
2. What happens if you break those rules?
3. Who enforces the rules at home?

The Year 1 students have had a busy time celebrating 77 years of Indonesian Independence.
Independence Day Choice Board: The students were asked to choose one activity from our Independence Day Choice Board to complete with their family members. Activities included having kerupuk or marble races, playing traditional games, singing along to Hari Merdeka or Indonesia Raya, decorating bicycles, or even creating their own way to show how they celebrate the day and then posting a photo or video in their class journal on Seesaw.
Upacara: On Friday 19th August, the Year 1 students were excited to attend their first in-person Primary School Upacara.
Primary Independence Day Assembly: During our special assembly, the Year 1 students enthusiastically performed their rendition of the traditional Betawi folk performance ‘Ondel-ondel’.
Traditional Games: Later, the students had the opportunity to play simple traditional games with their classmates.
Marker in the bottle: The students had to put a marker inside a bottle without using their hands.
Marble on a spoon: The students were challenged to move around the classroom to music whilst balancing a marble on a spoon.
