August 1st, 2024
On the 1st of August 2024, the Student Council’s first order of business after the satisfying break is to help introduce new students to the new school environment. With a total of 46 new students to welcome into the GJS community, the Student Council were ready and eager to ensure that each student was provided the opportunity to get well-acquainted with their peers.
The day started off with a “Welcome and Introduction” by the leadership team including our New Head of School Pak Howard and our new Secondary Principal Ibu Nelsy. The leadership team made sure that new students were feeling welcomed into our community as we understand how intimidating a whole new environment can be for everyone, including our principal. Thus, in this new school year, the new students aren’t the only ones feeling a bit new but rest assured that the GJS community is looking forward to creating bonds with new students and old students alike.
Moving on from the introductions, an overview of the IB Curriculum was presented by the academic coordinators in the hopes that new students would feel less confused about the curriculum for the first few weeks of school.
Once the presentations were finished, the Student Council was tasked with using an icebreaker game to make friends with the new students and ensure that each individual feels comfortable in the new environment they were faced with. This year, the Student Council used an “Orientation Bingo” in which students were expected to ask each other questions and take a selfie with someone who fit in one of the categories that were written. Categories included having a little brother, being able to play the guitar or has lived in another country. Making sure that the questions required students to be curious and willing to ask others more about themselves.
Following the presentations was the chance to take a break at the GJS canteen and socialize with Student Council members whilst also trying out the foods the canteen had to offer. During this time, many new students quickly found themselves in new cliques in which would help them get through the first few tough weeks in a new school.
The Induction Day was concluded with a school tour in which students were grouped together with Student Council members that were eager to help familiarise new students to the school environment. This included making sure that students were aware of the locations of particular classes, where to find teachers or staff, and campus ground rules.
At the end of day, we hope that all the new students no longer felt so alien to the GJS community. We extend our warmest welcome to the new members of our community and look forward to an eventful and wonderful year ahead.
