The culminating assessment for Unit 5 was a presentation about the student’s chosen historical figure on Wednesday, 23 April 2025. This historical figure had to be related to migration in some way. They could either do their presentation in the first-person perspective, the third-person perspective, or a mixture of the two. We then had a question/answer session when the presentation was finished, a peer feedback session where the students gave “compliment sandwiches,” and the teacher gave feedback. Students chose historical figures like Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, etc. In this way, students had the opportunity to learn about a wide array of different historical figures. They were able to correlate what they learned to concepts we investigated regarding human migration and the reasons for it. Some excellent presentations were made that showed a good synthesis of information. They were also able to make connections between many different ideas and historical facts.
For the provocation activity for unit 6 on Monday, 28 April 2025, Ibu Lasin, Ibu Centi, Ibu Nadia, Ibu Primi, and Pak Nick all set up five different learning stations centered around different ways that humans can express themselves artistically. We had stations for poetry, photography, music, dance, and Turkish rug design. Students were exposed to different art forms, modes of expression, literary devices, and different ways to interpret artistic messaging. As the unit unfolds, we will look at things like metaphors, smilies, symbolism, and deeper meanings that artists convey. We will learn about the subjectivity of art, how it can be related to culture, and how to harness our imaginations. There will be a focus on perspective and how we can all have different interpretations of the same art piece.
