Year 1 Travel Fair
Year 1 Explore Their Place in the World
Over the past seven weeks, our curious Year 1 students have embarked on an exciting journey of self-discovery and exploration, investigating their place in the world. Guided by Joan Sweeney’s captivating book, ‘Me on the Map,’ they delved into various geographical concepts, examining their home, street, town, city, province, island, country, continent, and ultimately, our vast world.
Throughout this inquiry-based learning experience, students showcased numerous attributes of the IB Learner Profile as they engaged in the summative assessment process.
Year 1 are Reflective:
Selecting a Presentation Style - Students were carefully supported in choosing a suitable medium for presenting their findings. They took time to reflect on their strengths, considering whether they excelled in speaking or writing. This introspection allowed them to select from various creative options, such as designing a poster, composing a booklet, recording a video, or conducting a live Pack Your Bag demonstration.
Year 1 are Inquirers:
Developing Research Questions - In their quest for knowledge, students showcased their curiosity by creating simple questions to guide their research. Building on what they learned in their English and Indonesian lessons, they formulated their own research questions, paving the way for more in-depth exploration.
Research and Information Gathering - As they continued their journey as inquirers, students accessed a variety of resources, including Pebblego.com, the ‘Little Country’ books, and Google. With the guidance and support of their teachers, they worked diligently to collect the necessary information to enhance their presentations.
Year 1 are Knowledgeable:
Connecting Knowledge to the Travel Fair - As they prepared for the Year 1 Travel Fair, students made meaningful connections between their newfound knowledge and the diverse locations they represented. This deepened understanding fostered a greater appreciation for their surroundings and enabled them to confidently share their insights with their audience. Their ability to relate their learning to real-life contexts not only enhanced their presentations but also instilled a sense of pride in their identities and cultures. Through this process, the students exemplified the principle of being knowledgeable learners, eager to explore and share their discoveries during the Travel Fair.
Year 1 are Communicators:
Developing Presentations - Moving from research to communication, students transformed their findings into captivating presentations. They embraced their roles as communicators, utilizing their creativity to effectively convey their knowledge to their classmates.
The Year 1 Travel Fair - The experience culminated in an exciting Year 1 Travel Fair, where students confidently took on the role of travel agents, engaging an audience eager to discover the various places they had explored. Their enthusiasm and self-assurance were evident as they presented their projects, highlighting not only their knowledge but also their development as inquirers and communicators.
Year 1 are IB Learners:
This inquiry-based project has not only deepened Year 1 students' understanding of the world around them but has also fostered valuable skills that align with the IB Learner Profile.
