Let's talk about typing! Kids use computers but don't (yet!) know how to TYPE!!!
If you don't teach gr 6 that doesn't mean that you have to suffer through the year with poor typists. If you plan to work on typing with your students, why not implement it for a month and have students set some goals for themselves for accuracy, speed and badges earned and then use this target as a key reflection for their Core Competency reflections. I believe that this process of goal-setting falls into self-determination, self-regulation, and personal strengths and abilities. As well, fast typists are often more fluent writers as the typing doesn't delay them in getting their thoughts out.
In grade six one of the suggested modules of ADST is Computers and Communication Devices. Throughout the year, students are expected to experience three modules at a minimum. If you chose to target "Computers and Communication Devices", you could provide warm-up time or cool-down time (after your class is clean for the day) and have students build their keyboarding skills. Grade 6 is the first time that keyboarding is mentioned in our curriculum but it is there.

- effective and efficient keyboarding techniques"
