In this project, you will develop an interactive media product, in this case, a 2D platform game. You will follow similar steps to those required in your FMP. First, you will research similar games and ideas for setting etc. Next, you will write a proposal for your game. Then you will plan the project, create the game and finally evaluate what you have produced.
Your games development student has been approached by a larger publisher to create a protoype for a game where the main player has been shrunk down to small size, similar to Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
You have been asked to produce one level or world of a 2d Platform Game. The level (world) should have a theme that you have researched and should feature gameplay elements from games you have researched. The game should be PEGI 7 and aimed at children between the ages of 8 - 12 years old.
It will need to specifically target that age bracket, as we are aiming for high sales at Christmas time!
All of the work from each day will be recorded into your site and the process will be reflected on.
Purpose and context:
Before starting a project you need to understand what you hope to create. To help with his you will be researching similar 2d games, tutorials that might help you and possible settings.
You will produce:
Research into 3 games.
Research into 3 tutorials.
Research into 3 settings including Moodboard made up of photos you have taken yourself and a survey to find peoples opinions of the settings.
For each item researched you will consider:
What - What have you looked at?
Why - Why did you choose this topic to research?
How - How will your research contribute to your final outcome?
Employability:
All games have to be researched and understood before starting on them.
Purpose and context:
Now you have done some research it is time to write a proposal for your game. This is a document where you lay out what you plan on making so this can be agreed upon with your sponsor.
You will produce a Proposal covering
The location for your level.
Enemies and obstacles in your game.
The player character.
Any power-ups or collectables.
The Platform your game will run on.
Technical Specification.
and more.
You will also justify the choices made.
Employability:
Writing and Presenting Proposals is a stage in every games development.
Purpose and context:
During the next few weeks, you will work semi-independently to create a 2d platform game making use of the tutorials you have found as well as the ones provided. During this you will plan out your time and keep track of projects using Kanban boards or an alternate planning method.
You will produce:
Evidence of using Kanban boards or other methods to plan your project.
A game featuring some of the following features:
Sprites.
Animations.
Tilemaps.
Dynamic Camera.
Warps between levels.
Collectables.
Enemies and static obstacles.
Doors and Keys.
Time limits on levels.
Employability:
Using Unity and producing a complete game show a range of skills that will be useful when applying to university or looking for a job.
Purpose and context:
Now your game is complete you will collect feedback from players and write an evaluation for how the project has gone.
You will produce:
A feedback form your can share with playtesters.
Responses for your feedback (at least 3).
An evaluation.
