BFA's Students in Action...
Course-work sections are organized by the five Transferable Skills students work on in their classes. These skills are highlighted in our Portrait of a Graduate and build students' capacity for career and college readiness.

Clear and Effective Communication
Students can demonstrate organized and purposeful communication.
Students can gather information from actively speaking, listening, and participating in class.
Students in the Heroes and Villains class discuss conformity using a Harkness Discussion protocol.
The students in the Vermont History classes present on "weird but true" stories from Vermont.
The Young Adult Literature class discusses the book, The 57 Bus, by Dashka Slater.
Students in the Acting Arts class delivered monologues in full costume.
Self Direction
Students have self-awareness, initiative, flexibility, and resilience in their learning.
Students have individual responsibility for their learning.
Students use technology to support and enhance their learning.
Freshmen students are "locked in" reading the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
Botany students making herbal salt scrubs using plant extracts. They each made their own concoction choosing plant essential oils and dried herbs or flowers.

Creative and Practical Problem Solving
Students observe and evaluate situations in order to solve problems.
Students persist in solving challenging problems and learn from failure.

Ted and Tim explore the affect of heat on chemical reactions in Intro to Chemistry class.
Solving using the Quadratic Formula in Math class.
The Forces and Motion class and their egg drop competition, using the playground structure for height.
Informed and Integrative Thinking
Students apply knowledge from multiple sources to make sense of their learning.
Students apply prior knowledge to the current task.
Leigh, a BTC Health Science Academy student, dissects a stomach!
Students in Spanish read and answer questions about a story, in Spanish!
Josie builds a DNA model in her Heredity and Genetics class.
Ava dissects a fetal pig in Anatomy and Physiology class, identifying organs and structures as she goes.
Responsible and Involved Citizenship
Students take responsibility for their actions and understand their impact on the community.
Students collaborate effectively and respectfully.
Students in Math 1 work together to match the domain and range with a particular graph.
Demonstrating responsibility toward "others", Tessa shows off the protective structure she built for her egg in an egg drop challenge in her Forces and Motion science class.
Students in the Botany class took a field trip to Chapin Orchards. They learned about pollination and integrative pest management.
The full high school band only gets to rehearse together once a month, but when they do the music is powerful!

Naviance
Naviance is a college and career exploration tool that helps students connect their interests, strengths, and skills to future career and educational pathways. Students take self-assessments, explore careers, and can use a search/matching tool to find colleges that fit their goals. Students applying to college will request teacher letters of recommendation and link their Common App account through Naviance.

9th Grade Check-in Meeting
In November and December, high school counselors will be meeting individually with each 9th-grade student for a brief check-in. These meetings are an opportunity to get to know students better, discuss how their transition to high school is going, and offer support with academics, social adjustment, and future planning. Our goal is that every student feels connected, supported, and aware of the resources available to help them succeed throughout high school.
Students can use the links below to schedule a meeting directly. If a student does not schedule a meeting, their school counselor will set up a time with them.
