Day 2

Navigating AI Bias
Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping English language teaching, presenting both opportunities and challenges. Educators must critically examine how algorithmic bias embedded within these tools can affect learning outcomes, particularly for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Common issues include voice recognition systems struggling with non-native accents, writing assistants that favour Western cultural norms, or AI tools reinforcing gender stereotypes, potentially hindering equitable learning.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify specific manifestations of bias in AI language tools used in ELT
Analyze how these biases might impact diverse learner populations
Develop practical strategies for critically incorporating AI tools while mitigating bias
Create activities that build students' awareness of AI biases
Expected Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will have
Gained practical experience identifying bias in common AI language tools
Developed prompting skills to mitigate bias in AI-generated content
Created at least one classroom activity that addresses AI bias with students
Connected with colleagues to form an ongoing community of practice focused on equitable AI implementation
