Day 1
6/26/2025
13:00 - 14:00
Session A D304 : Panic! At the Prep School
Language education stands at a crossroads with the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies. Rather than approaching AI with either uncritical enthusiasm or fear, this session presents "co-intelligence" as a nuanced framework for human-AI collaboration in language teaching and learning. Co-intelligence is the collaborative use of human and AI strengths to produce better and faster results than either can do on their own, with AI acting as a partner rather than a replacement or a mere tool. Drawing from concepts like "centaur" and "cyborg" approaches to technology integration, this presentation offers practical strategies for educators to harness AI's capabilities while maintaining pedagogical integrity.
Through practical examples and insights from research, participants will discover how co-intelligence can transform language education practices while preparing students for a future where AI-augmented communication is increasingly common.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the basic functioning of large language models and their implications for language education
2. Apply the concept of "co-intelligence" to design collaborative human-AI approaches to language teaching
3. Develop comprehensive AI literacy skills that include critically evaluating AI-generated content, recognizing system limitations, and implementing strategies to navigate inherent biases
4. Demonstrate effective prompting techniques and strategies for thoughtful AI integration in language education contexts
5. Foster critical AI literacy among language learners.
Christopher (Chris) Sanders, originally from the USA, combines more than a quarter century of experience in technology and language education. With a background in computer information systems and corporate training, Chris transitioned to ESL/EFL in 2004, first in South Korea before moving to Türkiye in 2013. Currently serving as the Associate Director for Assessments at MEF University's School of Foreign Languages in Istanbul, he is keenly interested in the responsible integration of EdTech and AI into language education. Since 2023, he has been leading workshops on AI in education around Türkiye and abroad. Currently, he is completing a second Master's degree in Language Education with NILE/University of Chichester, exploring the use of generative AI for providing ethical and effective student feedback.
