13:00 - 14:00
AI in Action: B1 Learners
In this interactive workshop, I will present a hands-on model for using artificial intelligence to support language development and learner engagement through prompt writing at the B1 level. The session is based on the AI Club I facilitated at Özyeğin University, where students explored how to use AI tools like ChatGPT to practice vocabulary, build fluency, and reflect on their learning. Despite the lower proficiency level, students successfully learned how to write and refine prompts, evaluate AI output, and use it to support their classroom learning.
The workshop begins by introducing the week-by-week structure of the AI Club, showing how each session scaffolded a different skill — from writing effective prompts to using AI for error analysis, vocabulary expansion, and reflection. I will share sample tasks, prompts, and student responses, alongside survey data collected over the semester that highlights student motivation, engagement, and self-perceived improvement.
Learning Objectives:
To demonstrate how prompt writing can be taught effectively to B1-level learners
To introduce an adaptable model for running an AI-integrated extracurricular club
To encourage reflection on the role of prompt literacy in developing autonomy and engagement
Expected Outcomes:
Participants will leave with ready-to-use materials and strategies for teaching prompt writing
They will experience a simplified prompt design activity they can replicate with students
I am an instructor at Özyeğin University School of Languages with over 10 years of experience in higher education. I teach academic English and design AI-supported learning tasks that promote learner autonomy, digital literacy, and reflective thinking. I currently coordinate the “Learn English with AI” student club and lead classroom-based projects that integrate tools like ChatGPT and MagicSchool into speaking, vocabulary, and self-assessment activities. My ongoing research explores how AI can support learner agency and metacognitive development in university-level ESL education.
