Class of 2026 and 2027,
In order to encourage commitment and retention to a Fine Arts or Athletics program for a full four years and encourage participation in the upper-level courses in these areas, students have the option to exclude from the weighted GPA calculation one credit course each year in grades 11 and 12. This allows juniors and seniors to participate in the below programs in the third and/or fourth year on a GPA exempt basis. This option is primarily for students who have a weighted GPA of 5.0 or greater. Students below a 5.0 will not likely benefit from opting out.
If you are not participating in one of the below programs for a 3rd or 4th year in a row, you can disregard this email.
The eligible single courses include:
Theater/Tech Theater
Dance/Drill Team
Athletic Trainer
Band
Color Guard
Athletics/Manager
Choir
Orchestra
*Does not include ensemble or off-campus PE
*The GPA exemption only applies for area of Fine Arts that do not contain option for weighted credit, thus Art is not an eligible area (Advanced and AP Art courses are available in four- year pathways
To exclude a course from the weighted GPA calculation, students must have two years participation in the single program of interest in two previous school years during high school. To request a GPA exemption for the upcoming school year, students must complete the “GPA Opt Out” form AND it must be approved by a parent & counselor by September 30th, 2025. The exemption form can be found on the student portal under the “GPA Opt Out Request” tile.
For more information including considerations regarding opting out, important dates, and steps to submission; please click this link.
All decisions are final, so please reach out to your counselor with any questions before submission.

We are so excited for you to start your final year at Reedy. We are proud of how far you have come and can’t wait to see what is next. We know this time is stressful and can be confusing with all the information surrounding what to do next. We will expand on the next steps during our Senior Guidance. Feel free to continue to work on any steps listed in this presentation prior to our meeting. This included starting your profile, writing your essays, and even taking the SAT or ACT again if needed.

Be part of the Thanksgiving magic by joining the flock of incredible volunteers who make the Turkey Trot happen! From packet pick-up at local YMCAs to water stops, finish line cheering, the Diaper Dash, or offering refreshments to racers — there’s a role for everyone. Students can even sign up as a group to serve together.
All volunteers receive a Turkey Trot shirt, and we are able to triple or even quadruple volunteer hours to recognize their commitment. This is a great way for students to earn hours while supporting one of Dallas’ most iconic Thanksgiving Day events.
Students can register to volunteer here: Volunteer Registration Link
