What a lovely first half term we have had in Year 2! I have been thrilled with everyone's enthusiasm to learn, curiosity and effort - keep it up! Here is a sample of what we have been up to.....
Learning in Autumn 1
This half term we have been learning a lot about numbers! We have practised making 2 digit numbers using counters, numicon pieces and base 10 equipment. We have looked at tens and ones in details, using equipment to help us to visualise larger numbers up to 100. We have partitioned numbers into parts and used models and images to help our understanding We are currently working on adding, using rekenrek bead counters to support us with crossing over 10. Ten is definitely a magic number in Year 2!
(By the way, please add practising the 10x table and related division facts to your list of things you can do at home! Thanks)
This half term has been all about friendship and considering our own and other's feelings! We have identified feelings and how others may feel in different situations, considering how we can help them. We have learnt about helpful and unhelpful things to say to each other and how we could support a friend who was unhappy. Year 2 are showing some lovely kindness and support to each other, often pointing out to me when they have helped someone!
Our art work this half term has focussed on drawing skills. We started by making marks using different medium such as pastels, soft pencil, crayons, paint and charcoal. We learnt new marks such as cross hatching, stippling, swirls and dashes. The marks were to represent the shapes in water, inspired by the work of Beth Krommes. We then created a backgroud texture for our mark making using the theme of water. Finally, whilst listening to music for inspiration, we painted and drew a range of marks to represent waves. We thought about movement, changes in colour and how the marks could show spray, droplets and tidal waves. Well done everyone!
Mental Health day in Year 2 was a joy! We sung and painted to music in the afternoon which everyone agreed made them feel good and relaxed. We then played 'body percussion' of stamps, claps and clicks to the song Happy which needed a lot of concentration! At OPAL playtime, lots of children enjoyed a playground disco to energise! We finished the day in the woods, listening to, and joining in with, a children's meditation. The breathing exercises and things to visualise took us on a journey to space in our imaginations. What a relaxing end to the week!
We had a fun Friday afternoon last week starting our DT topic, which this half term is cooking healthy snacks. After considering what 'healthy' meant, we learned how crisps were a type of processed food, often containing higher fat, salt and sugar. We set about making a healthier alternative - pitta chips! We sliced pitta breads into triangles, we added a little olive oil to give them a light coating and sprinkled over different herbs and spices to make different flavours. These were oregano, salt & pepper, chicken seasoning, garlic salt and paprika. After they were baked, the pitta chips were crispy and delicious! Nearly everyone found a flavour they liked and most agreed they were nicer than normal crisps! Why not try the recipe over half term?!
Have a super half term. Thank you for your support and we'll see you in November!
