Chicken Coop Care Instructions
Thank you so much for helping us take care of our chickens!
Letting the chickens out
To unlock the chicken coop, you will need to slide back the top part of the hook and lift it up. It is just extra security for the door.
The chickens are free to run around the outdoor classroom area.
Please make sure you put them back up before you leave. We have had a few chicken hawks eyeing them.
Check the nests for eggs
To the left of the door are the nesting boxes where you will find the eggs. Help yourself to any eggs you find.
Feeding the chickens
The chickens have a large self feeder in the corner of the coop. It should have plenty of food. Sometimes I use my hand to move around the food and loosen it up. Feel free to bring them any treats from home! They love fruits and veggies. Specific types of food that chickens should not be fed include raw potato, avocado, chocolate, onion, garlic, citrus fruits, uncooked rice or uncooked beans.
If the food looks low please text Mrs. Downs and she will put in an order.
Water for the chickens
There is one large water container next to the food. If it is filled, you are good. If it is empty or low you will need to fill it up. To do this you will need the water key to access the water. It is located in the small clear plastic container on the shelf. PLEASE put it back when finished. This is the only way families will have access to the water. We cannot lose it.
Step 1- Take the water key to the wall of the school building (see picture).
Step 2- Use the water key to unlock and open the “water access” door.
Step 3- Connect the end of the water hose to the spigot. The water hose is located in the large planter pot.
Step 4- To the right of the spigot, use the water key again to turn on the water. (left on- right off)
The water hose will now be on and ready to fill the container.
(*note- the hose does have a hole in it, and will spray out).
Drag the hose to the coop. Twist off the black cap on the top of the waterer and fill with water. Twist the cap back on. This will create a vacuumed seal and the water will not leak out
**Please turn off the water, unhook the water hose, and put the water key back in the basket.
Cleaning the coop
Check the nest boxes. See if they need fresh pine shavings. There is a
bag of shavings underneath the shelf. You can also sweep up any old
shavings in the coop and freshen it up if needed. There are trash bags
in the basket on the shelf.
Putting up the chickens
This is the fun part. LOL. The chickens will want to run away from you. Here is a trick. Calmly walk BEHIND the chickens guiding them back to the coop. Don’t be afraid to pick them up and put them up if you need too. Make sure you lock the screen door.
Thank you so much for your help, and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
