Drafting is a precise language because the drawing must communicate the information the designer had in mind to those who will be producing the product. The more accurate the drafting language used, the more effective the communication of the designers idea.
Technical drawings were traditionally made manually using pencil and vellum (a unique type of paper). However, with advances in technology, technical drawings are now created much more efficiently using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
Most industries use technical drawings at some point in the design process. Besides production drawings, technical drawings also include instructional booklets, graphs, charts, and maps. It takes 30,000 different drawings to manufacture one car!
