"You must plant trees. Thus, as you enter the Buddha Museum, you will be pleased to see the magnificent scenery with greenery." In 2010, under the guidance of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, over 100 monastic and lay members of Fo Guang Shan collected stones, laid turf, and planted flowers and trees in the Jetavana Grove. The grove was the first park to be completed within the Museum before its official opening in 2011. During the construction of the Buddha Museum, rolling dust prevailed on the construction site. The vigorous and thriving greeneries in the Jetavana Grove soothed everyone during work and cheered them up to continue working after a break.
In accord with Buddhist canons, for 25 out of his 49-year preaching life, Buddha stayed in the lush Jetavana Garden to lecture on the Diamond Sutra, Amitabha Sutra, and other Buddhist scriptures. Venerable Master Hsing Yun manages to reconstruct the scenery of "the Jetavana Grove" in the Buddha Museum. The speechless flowers and trees of all the species seem to interpret the mystery of nature with all-out effort. Their flourishing growth echoes an endorsed value in a Buddhism metaphor: "There is a world thriving in a single flower; there is a Tathagata presiding in a single leaf."

Children of all ages favor Grandpa Mahogany in the park of the Buddha Museum. It is appropriate here to review its immigration history.
When the construction of the Buddha Museum ended, mahogany was one of the old tree species being transplanted from Taitung.
Long-distance transplanting is laborious and arduous, but mahogany shows strong vigor and durability. Its dense branches and leaves manifest life in abundance and stand firm.
When the Buddha Museum was being built, Venerable Master Hsing Yun used to visit this nearly- 100-year-old grandpa mahogany. The hundred-year-old grandpa has a powerful stan following in ten years.
One day, a mother and her daughter were walking along the corridor. When they encountered a venerable in the hallway, the mother and daughter immediately asked him, "Where can I see Grandpa Mahogany?"
The venerable warmly guided them to walk along the north museum ring road, pass the Twin Pavilions, and approach the siding from the roundabout in Lumbini Garden. Eventually, they saw Grandpa Mahogany and took a group photo excitedly.
Grandpa Mahogany has Buddha nature, too!
On the morning of the inauguration of the Buddhist Botanic Gardens, the beautiful leaves of mahogany were falling gracefully upon the ground. The special guests and visitors were amazed at the scene and began to wonder if Grandpa Mahogany sensed something a little extra special.

A Bodhi tree from Nalanda of India stands between the Six Perfections Pagoda and the Four Giving Pagoda in the yard of Buddha Museum. The nine-year-old tree with a burgundy-colored and smooth trunk looks distinctive from the commonly seen species with a beige trunk, highlighting its uprightness. The main axis of the Bodhi tree yields a wide canopy of spreading five branches. The five-branch growth is likened to the spread of Buddhism, as Indian Patriarch Bodhidharma transmitted Chan Buddhism from India to China.
This destined Bodhi tree originates as a gift in the exchange between the chairman of Yilan County Buddhist Association, Venerable Yi Rong, and the chairman of Chiayi City Buddhist Association and the abbot of Chiayi Yuanshan Temple, Venerable Tian Xing. With the great assistance of Venerable Yi Run, the deputy chancellor of the Buddha Museum, the tree relocates to the Buddha Museum and begins to take root in the garden.
On a pilgrimage to India in 2011, Venerable Tian Xing visited Nalanda University and received three Bodhi saplings from an encounter. At that time, the fifteen-centimeter-tall saplings were quite fragile and vulnerable. Venerable Tian Xing feared the risk of fatal damage to the saplings, including fracture and loss of water and soil. She conscientiously protected the saplings with a handkerchief wrap and cushion while bringing them back to Taiwan. Venerable Tian Xing planted the young trees and provided them with the continued care of nutrients and irrigation. When the saplings reached 2 feet and became established three months later, they relocated to a mountainous region to thrive in an environment like other naturally occurring trees. Out of three, only one sapling survives for nine years and develops into a tree.
During your staying in the Buddha Museum, you have to spend several minutes on the lawn between the Six Degrees Pagoda and the Four Giving Pagodas in the park and talk to this Bodhi tree with the birthplace of Nalanda in India via telepathy.

Dr. Chen Chao-long, the honorary president of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Hospital, known as the "Taiwan’s Father of Liver Transplantation," helps numerous people to extend their survival. Still, he has the skills for raising seedlings and planting them out.
Dr. Chen said that trees beautify landscapes and benefit the ecosystem. Planting trees is also the first line of defense against global warming and climate change.
In February 2020, the 4th International Living Donor Liver Transplantation Congress took place in the Buddha Museum. To commemorate this successful biennial event, Dr. Chen Chao-long, the Congress President, and the other experts in the meeting planted 48 Acuminate Acmena trees on the grounds outside the Twin Pavilions of the Buddha Museum. Together with Fo Guang Shan Head Abbot Most Venerable Hsin Bau, these distinguished surgeons, scientists, and scholars seemed to compose heart-touching symphony movements for the Buddha Museum at that second.
