Nursing Services

In order to ensure proper SHARS billing for students receiving nursing services, please see the following procedure attached below.

If a private nurse is assigned to a student, the diagnostician will document the nurse's responsibilities in the deliberations. There is also a Skilled Nursing Services page where it lists the specific treatments/procedures the private nurse is providing. The diagnostician will ensure case managers, school nurse, and principal have copies of these documents.

If the nurses' are absent and we are doing diapering/feeding and such (that we don't normally do), do we then bill for these things? Yes

The private nurses normally document feedings.  Do we need to also document those or is their paperwork sufficient?  In their absence, should we document in our own way? 

We should have our own documentation. When the nurse isn't there, we document and indicate we fed and, that way we have a complete document.

We should document for the students with a private nurse, the way we document for the students without a nurse. When the private nurse isn't there, we note that a different way (i.e. highlight, check mark, etc.) so we know to bill for that service. 

Deliberation statements when the ARDC determines the parent will provide a PDN.

_____ 's services were reviewed by the ARD Committee.  The district can provide FAPE to ________  without the use of a private nurse.  Beyond those provisions deemed required for the provision of FAPE by the ARD Committee, parent has requested that ________ 's private nurse accompany him/her while he/she is in the school setting.  The parent will provide the private nurse subject to the District’s Private Duty Nurse agreement.  The private nurse will take care of all of _____ 's medical needs while he/she is at school.
