Over the weekend we were honored to attend the KPA Bradley Awards in Louisville, Kentucky! The KPA Bradley Awards seeks to build community amongst Kentucky and Southern Indiana high school theatre programs, celebrate young artists, and elevate the importance of theatre arts education.
Out of 35 participating high schools from around the state and Southern Indiana we were honored to be one of five schools nominated for awards in 5 different categories!

The SCAPA Senior Class of 2026 continues to set a high bar for academic and artistic excellence. Collectively, these talented graduates secured more than $14.9 million in scholarship offers spanning over 121 colleges and universities. Looking ahead, 33% of the class will pursue their SCAPA discipline as a college major, with an additional 9% planning to minor or study a closely related field.

SCAPA Lafayette students consistently distinguish themselves through academic excellence, a standard beautifully upheld by the Class of 2026. Of the 66 graduating seniors, 79% earned honors. SCAPA Lafayette recognizes 12 students graduating cum laude, 25 graduating magna cum laude, and 15 graduating with the highest distinction of summa cum laude.

The evening also served as a special moment to honor graduating seniors Ayumi T., Inge W., and Scarlett W., who were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and dedication to the piano program throughout their time at SCAPA.

The SCAPA Vocal program plays a vital role within the Lafayette Choirs, with SCAPA students of all majors participating as electives. The final concert of the year culminates in a touching tradition: all graduating senior choir students gather at the front of the stage to lead the singing of "Irish Blessing" one final time. This year, 19 seniors graduated from Lafayette Choir.

Her experiences have helped her to become a lifelong learner, civically and culturally engaged, future and life ready and reflective and resilient. The KPA Bradley Awards are the official Regional Awards Program for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards), dedicated to celebrating young artists and promoting theatre arts education. This program partners with high schools across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, adjudicating their musical productions. The awards culminate in a ceremony at The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, where outstanding students, educators, and ensembles are recognized.

The Lafayette Thespian Troupe recently gathered to celebrate a spectacular year of theatre and honor its graduating seniors. The end-of-year festivities included presenting annual awards and officially inducting 40 new members into the troupe.
Students are eligible to attend the annual Kentucky Thespians Festival (KTF), taking place in Bowling Green, KY, from November 5–7.

In 2022, the Kentucky Department of Education released guidelines for the Seal of Arts Excellence similar to the seal of Biliteracy. The Fayette County Board of Education approved our local requirements last year. The FCPS Seal of Arts Excellence is an opportunity that allows students to make concrete connections between their artistic endeavors and the district’s focus on high levels of achievement, cultural competence, and preparation for the future.
Earning the seal is a rigorous process, requiring students to curate a portfolio of their finest high school work. This year, Lafayette students truly shone, earning 44% of all awards presented across the district. Recipients are honored with a medallion to wear at graduation, a specialized seal on their diploma for each arts discipline achieved, and a permanent notation on their final transcript.

SCAPA Lafayette recognized 66 seniors in its senior class of 2026. Seniors are recognized for completion of the SCAPA program with their SCAPA diploma and medallion. Of those 66 seniors, 26 were recognized with the 9-Year Award for completing SCAPA from fourth through twelfth grades. Every senior also earned the FCPS Seal of Arts Excellence in one or more arts disciplines as a senior capstone requirement. The Don Trivette SCAPA Fine Arts Award and scholarship is SCAPA Lafayette's most prestigious student accolade. Established in honor of Don Trivette, a former Fayette County band director instrumental in creating the SCAPA program, this distinction recognizes students who exhibit excellence across multiple arts disciplines. Selected by a full vote of the SCAPA faculty, recipients are honored for their exceptional artistic versatility, exemplary character, and academic achievement—representing the high standards of a future colleague. Additionally, each recipient is awarded a $500 scholarship funded by the Friends of the Arts School parent booster organization.
In keeping with a long-standing tradition, Don Trivette recipients are the featured speakers at the SCAPA Senior Awards event. This year's recipients are Neala M. (Dance, Visual Art, Theatre) and James W. (Band, Jazz Band, Choir).

Kurtis Bradley Brown is a 2017 graduate of SCAPA Lafayette and who was also a SCAPA Don Trivette award recipient.
Kurtis Bradley Brown is a singer, dancer, and actor based in New York City. A graduate of the musical theatre program at the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music, he’s performed across the country, most recently appearing in Ogunquit Playhouse’s run of White Christmas. His pandemic pivot—taking a job at a local NBC station—led to an exciting stretch of production work in television and on Broadway, and to senior-level producer roles on the Biden and Harris campaigns and at the DNC. Kurtis is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund’s Victory Campaign Board and an active supporter of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Madelyn Dinh, a senior in the SCAPA Literary Arts program, has achieved the distinct honor of being named the 2026–27 Kentucky Youth Poet Laureate. In this prestigious role, she will serve as the literary voice for young writers across the Commonwealth. Historically, Kentucky’s Youth Poet Laureates have been featured at major state events, making appearances at the Kentucky State Capitol, collaborating with the Kentucky Arts Council, and taking center stage at cultural gatherings from Hindman to Paducah. Furthermore, Dinh will be under consideration for the National Youth Poet Laureate title—a high honor famously held by inaugural poet Amanda Gorman.

Sharing creative work is a vital part of the literary arts, and our Literary Arts program, led by Mr. McCurry, recently hosted a fantastic open mic opportunity. The Introduction to Technical Theatre and Advanced Technical Theatre classes have been working hard on bringing the Monster Project to life! This is a partnership project with Wellington Elementary where the kindergarten students draw pictures of imaginative monsters for the Lafayette Theatre Tech classes to bring to life! After a sewing unit, students have used their new skills, fleece, and a lot of hard work to turn these drawings into real life stuffed animals!
In May the classes will go on a field trip to Wellington to give the monsters to the kindergarten creators! Check out three monsters created by Laura, Ellie, and Ru in class, you can see their creation with the picture that inspired it!

A defense of learning presentation is a culminating event where high school students reflect on and publicly present their academic growth, skill mastery, and future goals to a panel of educators and peers. This past year, SCAPA Lafayette students pioneered this initiative for Lafayette High School by volunteering to present their personalized Seal of Arts Excellence portfolios. Through these presentations, students elegantly demonstrated how their years of rigorous artistic training, creative projects, and cross-disciplinary studies have shaped them into versatile, community-minded learners.

Lafayette SCAPA’s music honor society, Tri-M (Modern Music Masters), continues to make a difference both on and off campus. Comprising dedicated sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the group brought music to life this year through a sponsored "instrument petting zoo." Tri-M members visited Wellington Elementary School, giving budding musicians a hands-on introduction to different instruments and sharing the joy of music-making.

Dance SCAPA is the School for Creative and Performing Arts’ premier annual showcase, a highly anticipated main stage production held at the historic Lexington Opera House. This performance features the immense talent of dance majors and minors from grades 4–12. Audiences are treated to a captivating program of ballet and contemporary works, all expertly choreographed by SCAPA’s artistic faculty and distinguished guest artists.

On Saturday, March 14th, SCAPA Lafayette Voice majors shared outstanding performance at the KMEA Solo and Ensemble assessment, where they accounted for more than half of the total event entries. In a display of vocal excellence, every one of the 42 entries earned a Distinguished rating. Students showcased their mastery of classical repertoire—including art songs, folk music, and foreign language pieces—while receiving professional feedback from adjudicators to further refine their craft. Following this exceptional showing, qualified vocalists now have the opportunity to advance to the state-level event in May.

Congratulation to four of our Lafayette choral ensembles who earned Distinguished ratings at yesterday's KMEA Choral Assessment! The Advanced Treble Choir, Lafayette Singers, Lafayette Chorale, and Madrigal Singers were all recognized for excellence in performance and sight-singing. A special shout-out to the Lafayette Chorale and Madrigals, who earned unanimous perfect scores from all judges. All four of the participating ensembles have SCAPA students among their membership.

Janeway won first place in the undergraduate competition winning full tuition plus a $10,000 award! Elena won the Barbara Rouse Prize winning a $5,000 scholarship.

Every February, the Kentucky Music Educators Association brings together the state’s finest young musicians for its prestigious All-State ensembles, and this year, Lafayette High School made a monumental showing. Out of thousands of applicants statewide, an incredible 124 Lafayette students and four alternates earned spots across the choir, band, orchestra, jazz, percussion, and guitar ensembles. These talented performers traveled to Louisville for an intensive three-day residency, where they collaborated with nationally recognized conductors before taking the stage for a series of elite performances at the Kentucky Center’s Whitney Hall and other premier conference venues. The 2026 Lexington Youth Poet Laureate is Tony Robinson. This makes the fourth year in a row that the Lexington Youth Poet Laureate is a SCAPA Lafayette student!

Lafayette’s main stage winter production of The Music Man featured a massive ensemble of 75 actors and dancers, supported by a crew of over 20 technicians and a 20+ student pit orchestra. SCAPA students were essential to every layer of the show—commanding the stage in lead and supporting roles, mastering stage management, and executing everything from props and costumes to set design, lighting, sound, and live orchestration.
Theatre serves as the ultimate crossroads where diverse art forms meet in authentic collaboration. These Lafayette productions extend far beyond the Theatre and Technical Theatre departments; this performance showcased the talent of every SCAPA discipline, including Literary Arts, Visual Art, Dance, and Music.

The Lafayette Jazz Band traveled to Chicago to perform at the Midwest International Clinic, the world’s largest instrumental music conference! The Lafayette Jazz Ensemble, directed by, Dr. Strange, was a featured ensemble this week, playing an hour-long concert.
An invitation to the Midwest conference is one of the highest honors a high school or college group can achieve. This honor recognizes what we already knew: that the Lafayette Jazz Ensemble is one of the best in the nation!

Lafayette's Chapter of Modern Music Masters (Tri-M) welcomed 42 new members at the 2025 Induction Ceremony in Beeler Auditorium. Those new members will join the 33 returning members to comprise this year's chapter. Tri-M is an honor society dedicated to school music groups with a focus on service. The chapter sponsors activities for Music in our Schools Month in March as well as other service projects such as an instrument petting zoo. The LHS Madrigal Singers are spreading holiday cheer throughout December with a series of festive performances at throughout the community. The Madrigal Singers were the featured performance group for December Sunrise Sounds. Sunrise Sounds launched in March of 2025 as an initiative by the performing arts department that offers students a supportive space for performers to share their talents. The Lafayette Orchestras hosted their winter concert with performances by all four Lafayette Orchestras featuring over 150 students including 28 SCAPA string majors and members of the Lafayette Band to combine for Lafayette's Symphony Orchestra. Sarah Kinman, Lafayette Orchestra Alum and distinguished math teacher at Lafayette, was the guest conductor for the traditional Sleigh Ride!

Lafayette Band had 30 students earn a spot in the Kentucky Music Educators Lexington District 9th Grade Honor Band which will present a culminating performance in January at Scott County High School. 16 student earned spots in the district Jazz Bands and another 62 earned spots to the two concert bands and another 4 were named as alternates. Lafayette Band continues the tradition of leading the district in students recognized for honor ensembles.

On December 10, the Lafayette Band packed the Lafayette Gymnasium with 650 talented musicians for the annual Area Concert. This massive showcase brought together our entire feeder pattern, featuring 300 middle schoolers from Jessie Clark and SCAPA Middle, alongside 150 elementary students from Wellington, Clays Mill, Stonewall, Picadome, and SCAPA Elementary. Joining them were 200 high school performers, including our own SCAPA Lafayette students, for a powerful evening of music that filled every corner of the gym.

The Lexington City Council recently recognized the Lafayette Pride of the Bluegrass marching band for its landmark 25th Championship season. Mayor Linda Gorton presented a special city proclamation to celebrate the achievement. The band was proudly represented at the meeting by its four student drum majors and directors Dee Bishop and Dr. Chris Strange.

The Lafayette Choirs celebrated the season with two standout winter concerts. The first, hosted in Beeler Auditorium, showcased the Troubadours, Treble Choirs, and Madrigal Singers, with SCAPA students featured prominently throughout the program. The second performance, held at Singletary Center for the Arts, featured the Lafayette Singers, Chorale, and Madrigals, concluding with powerful selections from the combined choirs.
This season’s performances were enriched by special guest collaborators, including the SCAPA Bluegrass Elementary Voice Majors (directed by Amanda Wells). Reflecting the true spirit of the program, these choirs represent a diverse collective of SCAPA students from every artistic discipline.

Continuing a cherished local tradition, the Lafayette Madrigal Singers performed at the annual Southland Drive firehouse tree lighting. The ensemble has been a staple of this event since its very first year, and this season was no exception. Despite the freezing temperatures, the singers shared festive songs for a crowd that included Mayor Linda Gorton and several city council members.

The Lafayette Madrigal Singers and Troubadours hit the road to visit several schools which feed into Lafayette. The tour began at Clays Mill Elementary School, continued at Jessie Clark Middle School and ended the day at Stonewall Elementary where Lafayette Choir alum Kailey Marshall is the elementary music specialist. The tour is intended as an outreach program encouraging all student to take part in arts programs at their schools.

Senior voice major Janeway Howard presented an inspiring TEDx Talk on "Old Music in the New World: Opera's Continuing Relevance" at Dunbar High School. 44 Student Thespians traveled to the Kentucky Thespian Festival
The cast of James and the Giant Peach performed and received exceptional feedback and superior scores across the board.
Students received straight superior ratings on their Thespy presentations at Kentucky Thespian Festival in November.
Isabelle Dinh, Grace Hellard, and Maya Duggal performed at the Thespys Showcase
Grace Hellard, Reece Owens, and Tyler Terrell, represented the state as State Thespian Officers.
Multiple students received scholarships from numerous colleges and universities.

Congratulations to the Lafayette Choir students selected for the KMEA Senior High All-State Choirs, an achievement that once again sees Lafayette leading the state in total participants. To earn their spots, students excelled in a rigorous multi-stage audition process featuring a cappella quartet performances, solo repertoire, and individual sight-reading, while our talented freshmen secured their positions through highly competitive recorded submissions. This prestigious honor culminates in a series of elite performances at the Kentucky Center for the Arts Whitney Hall in Louisville during the first week of February 2026, showcasing the very best of Kentucky’s vocal talent on one of the state's premier stages.

Beaumont Presbyterian hosted the SCAPA Junior and Senior Voice Majors for a wonderful Fall recital. The performance centered on classical repertoire, with students presenting a diverse program of art songs and arias that highlighted their growth and versatility as vocalists.

Jason Brooks, Executive Director of the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA), recently visited SCAPA Lafayette to lead a presentation on the program’s summer intensive and audition process. The assembly opened with reflections from current SCAPA students and GSA alumni, who shared performances and stories of how the program transformed them as artists. This year’s featured alumni included Kara Neiser (Piano ’25), Haiwen Shi (Art ’25), and Shiloh Nsaku (Voice ’25). With dozens of SCAPA students accepted into this life-changing program annually, interested artists are encouraged to complete their applications and first-round submissions before the early January deadline.

The Lafayette Jazz Band and their Director, Dr. Chris Strange, were honored at the November 2026 board of education meeting. The ensemble will be performing as a featured ensemble at the December 2025 Midwest International Clinic for bands and orchestras in Chicago.
Student, Chloe Hillard, represented the ensemble in addressing the board members and superintendent. The performance featured Livin' Larger than Life by Alan Baylock.

Lafayette's Jazz Band received a prestigious invitation to perform at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference. Being invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic is widely considered one of the highest honors in instrumental music education. It signifies that an ensemble has achieved an exceptional level of musical excellence, placing them among the very best programs internationally. The Jazz Band will travel to Chicago in December 2025 to perform as a featured ensemble.

The Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra kicked off its season with the historic premiere of "We the People," an original work celebrating Lexington’s 250th anniversary. The massive collaboration featured 250 FCPS high school vocalists and a hundred student musicians.

The Lafayette Choir recently hosted its annual Treble Choir Festival, welcoming guest ensembles from Dunbar, Leestown, and SCAPA Bluegrass. This year’s festival featured Mary Beth Hamilton from McNabb Middle School, as the guest conductor. Representing the host school was the Lafayette Advanced Treble Choir, one of three premier SCAPA choral ensembles available to students.

Beeler Auditorium was transformed for "Mischief Night," a spirited costume concert featuring a collaboration between the Lafayette Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras and the SCAPA Bluegrass orchestra. Over 120 student musicians took the stage, performing a program of haunting tunes and mischievous melodies.

All-City Choir to perform the National Anthem and "My Old Kentucky Home," officially kicking off the October 25th meet at Keeneland. SCAPA Senior Vocalist, Janeway H., held a dual role, conducting the choir for the national anthem and performing a duet for "My Old Kentucky Home."

Continuing a long-standing tradition, the Sophomore SCAPA Voice Majors presented a recital featuring the music of John Jacob Niles, a Kentucky native noted for collecting and arranging traditional American folksongs. The performance is uniquely staged in the UK Fine Arts Library's J.J. Niles Gallery, utilizing the composer's own Steinway piano and featuring an immersive display of his personal artifacts.

The Lafayette Choir joined The inaugural Lexington All-City Chorus for a spectacular debut at the Singletary Center for the Arts as part of the In One A-Chord: Lexington Sacred Music Festival. Featuring over 400 Fayette County Public Schools students, the performance of Vivaldi’s "Gloria" brought together young vocalists alongside the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra.

The Lafayette Choir took part in the annual Bluegrass Chorale Music Festival, an event hosted by the University of Kentucky Choirs. For SCAPA Voice Majors, this day-long festival is one of their community collaborative performance activities. Over 200 singers from across the state participated in this year's festival.

The Choir Gala kicks off the Lafayette Choirs season, showcasing the remarkable talent of our Chorale, Singers, and Madrigal ensembles. This opening concert also features solo performances from selected SCAPA voice majors, celebrating the diverse artistic talents of SCAPA students across all disciplines who participate in our choral program.

Louisville-based cellist, Emmy-winning composer, and environmental activist Ben Sollee recently visited Lafayette High School to work with our orchestra students. Sollee is a 2002 Graduate of SCAPA Lafayette. Over his career he has blurred the boundaries between art and social impact. Sollee brought an inspiring experience directly to the Lafayette orchestra students.

Each fall beginning with auditions on the second day of school, Lafayette Theatre launches an ambitious goal of mounting a show in less than six weeks. Alice Lugauer and Rachel Jones, two of our SCAPA Literary Arts students won recognition at the 2025 KET Young Writers Contest. The annual contest encourages creative expression and literacy development by inviting students in grades Pre-K through high school to submit original graphic novels, illustrated stories, poetry and short stories. This year, KET received 1,011 entries from students across Kentucky.
