Program Overview

The SCAPA Lafayette Guitar program helps train young players in the techniques and artistic performance aspects needed to be an accomplished guitarist. This training supports students in following their passion for the guitar from youth into their adult lives. This passion may become their vocation or be an integral part of their lives as an avocation. The students come from varied backgrounds and are able to share their love of the guitar and their guitar experiences with each other throughout the four-year program.

Curriculum

The curriculum for SCAPA Lafayette Guitar Majors covers solo guitar repertoire spanning major historical style periods—from the Renaissance and Baroque through contemporary 21st-century music. Alongside solo performance, students refine their ensemble skills by collaborating in duos, trios, quartets, and full guitar ensembles. The program also explores music history and the evolution of the guitar while offering robust performance opportunities throughout the year. Students regularly learn from guest performances and masterclasses led by professional musicians and instruction experts.

Outcomes

The SCAPA Lafayette Guitar program prepares students to continue musical study at the college level to pursue careers as performers, studio musicians, and guitar instructors. As an avocation, students are also equipped to share their love of the guitar as solo performers and as collaborators through participation in a variety of musical ensembles.
