My DL research essential question is, "How can secondary students deepen their learning by teaching Korean Culture through a PBL approach to various other students?"
To spread the Korean language and culture more effectively in Kentucky, where Korean is not officially recognized as a World Language, here are some good strategies I will propose:
Using a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach to deepen students' learning while teaching Korean culture to others
Partnerships with Local Schools and Organizations: Collaborate with other schools or community organizations to offer joint language and culture programs. This could involve hosting Korean language classes or cultural workshops at different schools or community centers.
Language Exchange Programs: Establish language exchange programs where Korean-speaking students can partner with English-speaking peers to practice language skills together. This fosters mutual learning and cultural exchange.
Community Outreach and Events: Organize cultural events and activities open to the wider community, not just students. This could include Korean food tastings, cultural performances, or workshops on Korean traditions. By engaging the community, you can generate interest and support for Korean language and culture.
Opportunities under the South Korean Government: Explore various events hosted by the Chicago Korean Education Center: Participate in Essay Contests for foreign students, dress up in Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) for a photo contest in front of Lexington landmarks, attend the Korean Language Festival in May in Chicago, and more.
Presentation and Reflection: Have students present their projects to peers, teachers, or the wider community. Allow time for reflection on what they have learned and how the project has contributed to their understanding of Korean culture.
Making Korean an Official World Language for High School Students to Earn Credits Before College: Recognizing Korean as an official world language is essential to providing high school students with the opportunity to earn credits prior to attending college. By doing so, students will have the chance to study and master Korean language skills, thereby expanding their linguistic proficiency and cultural knowledge. This proactive measure not only benefits students academically but also promotes diversity and global understanding in educational settings.
Timeline
The purpose of my timeline is to visually represent the planning and prioritizing of my DL project. It aims to cultivate a sense of accountability among my students and collaborative teachers.
My systems map's purpose is to create visual representations of a system, including its components, such as materials, human resources, and supportive facilities. My diagrams help analyze the interactions among these elements, providing comprehensive insight into how the entire system functions as an entire system.
