The Korean class at TLC aims to introduce students to the Korean language and culture in an engaging and informative manner. The objectives of the class include:
Providing captivating lectures on Korea, the Korean language, and its culture
Offering suggestions on integrating this knowledge into the current curriculum to enhance Global Competency
Organizing hands-on cultural activities and performances to make learning fun
Collaborating with the local Korean community for an authentic program experience
The class meets twice a week for two hours each session. Ms. Sujung Jung, a Korean language expert from the local community, dedicates her time to teaching the Korean language during every class period. Her commitment to TLC students is highly valued and appreciated.
Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, students focused on learning the Korean language and exploring Korean culture. One of the highlights was preparing authentic Korean food as part of Student-Led Learning Activities. Students researched various Korean dishes, cooked them monthly, and shared their experiences through digital portfolios. They also showcased their cooking skills on special occasions such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and family birthdays.
The aim of the Korean class reaches beyond TLC; it extends to other schools in the area. The students were invited to participate in events such as the Night of Nations at Stonewall Elementary and hosting a Lunar New Year celebration at Central Public Library.
As part of community engagement, TLC students partnered with an elementary school, teaching Korean culture and language. Students from TLC guided elementary students in making 'JuMeokBap', a Korean rice dish. These activities aim to promote Korean culture within Lexington, the community, and Fayette County using Project-Based Learning methods and showcase events.
Looking ahead, the class plans to continue spreading awareness of the Korean language and culture through Project-Based Learning initiatives in the upcoming school year. The ultimate goal is to advocate for Korean recognition as an official World Language in Kentucky.
