Learning is, of course, the central aim of being at school and our engaging curriculum ignites a lifelong love of learning.
We focus on taking a Growth Mindset approach - the belief that we can all develop our knowledge, skills, understanding and achievement through effort, reflection and support. We want every pupil to know what success looks like for them, and how to get there. Mistakes are a helpful part of the learning process because we can learn from them and do better next time.
Each school day offers a diverse range of subjects and learning opportunities, sparking curiosity and engagement. We are focused on a future-ready education which prepares children for the modern world, while also ensuring that they are well-educated about the past and other cultures.
If there is any aspect of your child's learning experience you are concerned about or wish to discuss, please contact their Tutor, subject teacher or the relevant Head of Department.
Although there are no bells rung between lessons, punctuality is important and we need each lesson to start promptly at its published time.
Pupils should not be going back to their locker in between lessons, as this will make them late. They need to organise themselves before school and at breaktime to make sure they have everything they need with them for the lesson, including a water bottle (other drinks are not allowed).
Prep is an important part of making progress, and so the time spent on this increases as pupils get older. However, we recognise that we have a very full day at Farlington, and we want to ensure that we do not burden pupils unduly. For this reason, teachers should set prep for the days and durations specified and should not vary from these.
Our policy is that prep should always be relevant and never set for the sake of it.
Consolidation of learning is important for every subject, and some subjects, such as languages, rely on this for increasing vocabulary. Pupils must gradually also become independent learners and will receive guidance to that effect. You may wish to remind your child of this if they say they have no prep.
For Year 7 to Year 11 upwards, a prep timetable will be posted in the relevant Virtual Form Room at the beginning of the term and the details should be transferred to the section provided in the ePlanner. Expectations will be shared at the Parent Information Evening. For pupils in Year 6 and below the class teacher will communicate prep arrangements direct with parents at the start of the year.
If you have any worries or queries about prep in general, please do not hesitate to speak to your son or daughter’s class teacher or Form Tutor.
An outline of what your son or daughter will be learning about is available through our Curriculum MicroSites. Please do take a look by clicking on the bar below.
