If you experience a robbery or theft of your items, let the thieves take your items. Mace or pocket knives may be turned against you. Your safety is always more important than material objects because they are replaceable and you are not.
File a police report at a local police station or call 911 and they will instruct you.
Always keep a copy of any reports you file or forms you receive. Your home insurance might cover the stolen items.
You can call Expanish Emergency number. We will be able to comfort you and advise you on possible next steps.
Theft
Buenos Aires and Argentina are safe for travelers from all countries, but foreigners need to take the same basic safety precautions during their stay, just like any other big city in the world, so they do not become targets to petty theft/crime. We recommend you carry only what you need while exploring the city and keep valuables at home. For example, don’t carry all your credit cards in your wallet just in case that item is stolen.
Safety Tips
Have a photocopy of your passport and other important documents stored separately from the originals.
Avoid the use of smartphones, wearing flashy jewelry or speaking loudly in foreign languages.
Keep your personal belongings on you at all times, even when sitting down at a restaurant.
Women Travelers: Buenos Aires is safe for women traveling and sightseeing alone. Follow the safety tips above and use common sense as you would in a big city. Avoid walking alone in unlit streets. If you feel uncomfortable in an area or in a situation, take a taxi home. Note that Argentine men are very forward and women sometimes receive catcalls and whistles; simply ignore them.
For Lost / Stolen Items
Remember you must make a police report. If there wasn’t any violence involved, you could also fill out the police report online: https://denunciaonline.policiadelaciudad.gob.ar/#/home
