Often known as Ameyoko, Ameya Yokocho is a market street that runs from Ueno station to Okachimachi station. The market is home to hundreds of shops ranging in all kinds of goods. The market has food, like fish and snacks, as well as clothes, bags, cosmetics, and other products. It is a busy market that is known for bargaining.
There are two possible reasons behind the name Ameya Yokocho. One being that traditionally, candies were sold in the alley and “ameya yokocho” means candy alley. The other that “ame” is short for America, and after WWII the street was a black market for American goods.
Ameyoko is especially busy around New Year’s, when people are shopping for New Year’s food and gifts.
The market is generally open from 10:00 to 20:00 (8:00PM), but it depends on individual stores.
