UH Manoa's College of Engineering will be hosting an annual Junior Engineers Summer STEM Experience (JESSE) internship program that spans 6 weeks each June-July. JESSE is an amazing opportunity for rising high school seniors to gain real world experience in the engineering field and work within one of our UH Mānoa labs under the guidance of a lab mentor. Interns also have the opportunity to visit professional workplaces showcasing engineers in action and develop their professional portfolio through workshops and other interactive experiences designed just for them.
Here are some reasons why last year’s interns enjoyed the program, in their words:
“I liked working in the lab. It gave me a chance to explore engineering in a real world experience. I think other high school students should participate because it opens you up the the possibilities you are capable of and can help grow you as a person and a future engineer.”
“I really liked meeting so many new people outside of my school, many of whom had similar interests to me. I learned a lot about engineering, and now have a clearer idea of what I want to study in college and beyond. I also liked visiting so many different engineering companies to see how they work up close.”
“I liked most about the JESSE program the ability to network with various college students, faculty, and ambassadors to learn the college experience through the lens of an engineer. It was also great participating in hands on activities to enlighten my understanding and passion of engineering. Other high school students should participate in this program since they will have a better understanding if engineering is a major they want to pursue from the many opportunities and insight presented.”
Qualified and interested students should apply at https://www.eng.hawaii.edu/outreach/jesse/. The deadline is Monday, March 25, 2024.
