AP Courses & Dual Credit

ADVANCED  PLACEMENT (AP)

MBTA offers a number of AP courses and students are encouraged to meet with the Secondary Counselor to discuss course placement when pre-registering for the upcoming school year.

All AP courses are year-long and students are required to take the end of course exam.

Contact the Secondary Counselor for additional information.

DUAL  CREDIT

Dual credit programs provide high school students with an opportunity to complete college-level courses at a local community college or four-year institution.  MBTA participates in the Running Start Program for students in the 11th and 12th grade with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Running Start allows students to earn both high school and college credits for courses completed through the University of Hawaii system.

Students and their families are responsible for all costs associated with this program.  Families who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch may apply for the GEAR UP Scholarship on a first-come first-served basis, with preference given to rising graduates.

To match skill level to enrolled courses students may be required to complete one or more placement tests if the student does not have a recent SAT, ACT or 11th grade SBAC test result.  Unlike the SAT and ACT, placement tests are not used as an admissions requirement.  They serve as a diagnostic examination after admission, but prior to course registration.   Details about the Accuplacer test and the EdReady test.

Contact the Secondary Counselor for additional information.

Dual Credit - Running Start Program

Running Start is a program that allows “eligible” high school students to take a college course at a University of Hawai‘i campus as part of their high school coursework.

This partnership between the Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) and the University of Hawai‘i System (UH) allows high school students attending public and charter schools to enroll in college classes during the fall, spring, and summer terms – with the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits.
