Kupu is seeking individuals to participate in their upcoming Hawai‘i Youth Conservation Corps. If you or someone you know, is passionate about learning how to improve and preserve Hawai‘i’s natural resources and cultural landscape and want to make a difference to the community, then consider applying to our upcoming summer cohort.

The Hawai‘i Youth Conservation Corps Summer Program offers an intensive hands-on experience into the world of conservation. This year Kupu is inviting applicants to apply on Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui, and Hawaiʻi Island.

Program Duration: June 7th - July 22rd

Application Deadline: February 25th

If selected, participants are partnered within a team of 5-7 other like minded individuals which serve alongside one another for the duration of the 7-weeks. Each week they will get to explore and serve within a different partner site, bringing with it new adventures, challenges, learnings and opportunities for personal growth. Participants will get to learn about a variety of ecosystems, natural resource management techniques and cultural practices unique to Hawai‘i all while giving back through service. One week they might be chest deep sifting through a loʻi, then the next they might be on the side of a mountain restoring the native watershed.

There are two ways to participate, either as a Team Member or Team Leader. Members are typically between the ages of 17 - 22, don't necessarily need any prior environmental experience, instead the ideal applicant is someone with a positive attitude, curious about nature, interested in learning, and has a desire to strengthen their community through service.

In addition to the First Aid & CPR certification, members receive a $500 monetary stipend, and $1,311 AmeriCorps Education Award (similar to a scholarship), gain valuable experiential environmental education, build close relationships with their peers and will further develop their own personal skills in the areas of leadership, organization, team work, and decision-making. These skills will be relevant no matter the career they choose to pursue, and will instill an appreciation for the land and what it provides.

The Team Leaders don’t mind extra responsibility. They are the backbone for the team, responsible for assisting, coordinating and inspiring the members each day. Ideally, the leaders are 21+ years and older, have experience in leading groups and have knowledge pertaining to unique Hawaiʻi native plants, and customs. They play an integral role in the success of the program and forming the experience the members have. As a result, their benefits are different from the members, they will receive a $12.50 hourly wage rate with fringe benefits, plus overtime.

This experience is a unique opportunity to grow, spend a summer outdoors learning and building relationships, and an opportunity to positively impact both the community and environment. If you have any questions check out our Frequently Asked Questions, or feel free to contact the team via email: hyccsummer@kupuhawaii.org or by phone: (808) 735-1221 x2001. If you think that this is something someone you know would benefit from, please share this and encourage them to contact us.

Coast Guard Recruiting Virtual Career Day Presentation

This is a friendly reminder that we are a little less than a month away from our Coast Guard Recruiting virtual career day via zoom. The attached flyer includes the meeting information such as meeting ID and passcode. The presentation for the virtual career day will be geared towards students and young adults who may be considering enlistment options in the Coast Guard. Our Local Coast Guard Recruiters will provide basic information about the Coast Guards roles, missions, available opportunities and enlistment eligibility. We ask that you please encourage attendance especially if you’re not physically located in Guam or on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. This will give those students and young adults an opportunity to interact with an actual local Recruiter. Although the presentation will be tailored for students and young adults, you are all more than welcome to join the career day as well. If you know of anyone else who might find value in receiving information about our career day and have not received this email please feel free to forward the information along to them.

PacMUN 2021

November 19-21

Dear Advisors & Head Delegates,

We hope you are all having a great summer! As we are growing closer to fall, the PacMUN Secretariat and Board of Directors have made a decision on the format of this year’s conference. Due to the high rates of Covid-19 vaccinations in Hawaii and lifting restrictions on in-person events as indicated by the state,, we are excited to announce that PacMUN 2021 will be held in-person, in Honolulu, Hawaii!

We will largely be planning to host an in-person conference from November 19-21, as we have done in past years, subject to venue availability and unless unforeseen circumstances occur. In the unfortunate event that transmission rates increase and/or guidelines by the CDC or State of Hawaii indicate that an in-person gathering of the size of PacMUN is unsafe, we will convert to an online conference very similar to PacMUN 2020.

Although in the past, we have traditionally held PacMUN at the Hawaii Convention Center with lodging options at the Ala Moana Hotel for out-of-town guests, we are currently looking into alternative venues that can accommodate our numbers with socially distanced spaces, and will be sending out more information once details are finalized. Depending on space availability, we may need to have a hybrid conference with a combination of in-person and virtual committees.

For delegations who plan to attend in-person, we highly encourage and prefer both students and advisors to be fully vaccinated as the CDC and State of Hawaii has advised. For out-of-town delegations, please hold off on booking plane tickets and lodging until we are able to provide you with further confirmation and information. We know that the transition back into in-person events for conferences such as PacMUN present a unique challenge for delegates and teachers alike, and we highly encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns regarding the conference.

In the coming weeks, we will be releasing more information on logistical details, committees, and more, so please keep an eye out for emails and more information. We look forward to hopefully seeing you all in-person soon!

Best Regards,

Yoo Ra Sung & Jake Steiner
