Virtual & Augmented Reality

According to Wikipedia, Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that uses virtual reality headsets or multi-projected environments, sometimes in combination with physical environments or props, to generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations that simulate a user's physical presence in a virtual or imaginary environment. A person using virtual reality equipment is able to "look around" the artificial world, and with high quality VR move around in it and interact with virtual features or items.

Virtual Reality is actually not a new concept (see the visual timeline below). What is new is the accessibility of VR devices and applications for classroom use. Teachers need access to a VR headset and a device (iPod/smartphone) as well as specific applications and/or websites for an immersive 3D experience. Teachers may access the applications and/or websites with mobile tablets; it is not as immersive but still effective.
