Open Dialogue

The most important media literacy habit we can encourage in our kids is to ask questions about the media they consume. (Source)

Having conversations with your child about how they use technology can help you find out what their screen experience is like, including their favorite sites and games. (Source)

Look for teachable moments

    • Sit with your child and discuss what is on their screen. Ask them questions and offer your opinion. Show interest in what they are doing.
    • Ask your child to tell you about the sites they like to visit.
    • Ask them how they stay safe online. What tips do they have for you?
    • Encourage your child to help you find something online or show you how to use an app

Other sample questions to ask your child:

  • What are you looking at?
  • How does this make you feel?
  • How does this [app, show, game] get and keep your attention?
  • Who can see what you have created?
  • How do you have balance with being online and offline?
  • How are you creating a positive online presence?
  • How can we, as a family, reduce the risks of too much screen time?

Questions to Consider:

  1. Are your discussions around screen time with your child proactive or reactive?
  2. Does your family have a media plan or rules that are consistent and enforced?
