Welcome from Principal Fatima Avila
Dear Silver Spring Families,
I hope you and your family are doing well and the weekend.
We are ready to open our school for the 2020-2021 school year and we ask you to do the following:
1) Read this newsletter.
2) Complete the Contact Information form.
3) Log into Skyward and familiarize yourself with the Wellness Check that you will be doing each morning by 8:30 a.m. for your child, and complete the Wellness Check each morning before arriving at school. Also, read the Nurse's information and newsletter that was sent to you carefully to ensure that you understand what is needed to return to school.
4) Know what your child's number is and what door your child will be lining up at arrival and dismissal, including the time your child will be dismissed.
5) Ensure that your child is practicing social distancing at arrival, at the bus stop, and at dismissal.
6) Ensure that your child wears a face covering, while waiting in line.
7) Pack an extra face covering in a plastic baggie (zip top sandwich bag works great) for your child.
8) Sign up for Class Dojo with your child's teacher.
9) Let your child's teacher know if your child is going to get a school lunch at least a week ahead. For instance, let your child's teacher know what day next week (week of September 21) your child will be getting a school lunch (there is only one option).
10) Send your child to school this week, only on the days that your child's grade is scheduled to be in school.
11) If your child is engaging in distance learning and you did not pick up a Chromebook and materials last Friday, please let your child's teacher know when you will be picking up these items prior to Friday, September 18th, which is when your child will need the Chromebook and materials.
12) Please read the re-entry plan for information regarding the return to school.
13) Lastly, please ensure that your child gets enough sleep, so that he/she is ready to learn each day.
Thank you for being such a great partner with us in your child's educational journey.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at favila@epschoolsri.com.
Please review the School Opening slideshow that was emailed to you for additional information.
Parents and Guardians will screen their child(ren) at home
This will include taking students' temperatures and completing a secure form in Skyward.
The Skyward Wellness Check Instruction are below.
It is critical that we have updated phone numbers, email addresses, and emergency contact information throughout the school year. Parents and guardians are asked to complete a School Emergency Contact Form immediately and provide updates to Mrs. Duarte (kduarte@epschoolsri.com) as soon as possible, if any of your information changes. An email was sent to you with the link that will allow you to access the form without delay.
Thanks to parent and guardian feedback at the end of the last school year, we are using school wide ClassDojo as another way to communicate with our families.
Therefore, connect with us through the ClassDojo app at the start of the year. More information will follow from your child's teacher.
Faculty, staff and students are required to wear face coverings when at school (which includes the bus). The purpose of wearing face coverings is to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
In order to help our students prepare for wearing face coverings in school, our students should practice wearing face coverings at home prior to the start of the school year.
More information regarding wearing face coverings is in our Re-Entry Plan.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this safety procedure.

If you did not pick up your child's Chromebook and materials last Friday, please let your child's teacher know when you will be stopping by the school to pick up these items.
Many of our families have chosen distance learning for the first semester of this school year. The following is information regarding what to expect during this time:
Students will be provided a schedule to follow (teachers will share the schedule with parents/guardians/students).
Students will be expected to be logged in and ready to participate in Google Meets at the assigned times.
Student attendance will be taken based on the student attending classes during the day.
Students will be marked tardy (if morning classes are missed), absent (if all classes are missed), and dismissed (if afternoon classes are missed).
Each student engaging in distance learning will be required to use East Providence School Department Chromebook, which will be distributed at Silver Spring on Friday, September 11th between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Math and ELA materials, earbuds, and other information will be distributed with Chromebooks.
Please refer to the Student Technology & Materials' Pick Up information below for additional information.
With children returning back to school, it is important for children to have a good sleep routine and get enough sleep each night. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, sleep is essential for optimal health in children and adolescents. The following is an exerpt from The American Academy of Sleep Medicine:
Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
Sleeping the number of recommended hours on a regular basis is associated with better health outcomes including: improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health.
Regularly sleeping fewer than the number of recommended hours is associated with attention, behavior, and learning problems. Insufficient sleep also increases the risk of accidents, injuries, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and depression.
Parents who are concerned that their child is sleeping too little or too much should consult their healthcare provider.
We are reached out to incoming kindergarten families during the week of August 31st to schedule kindergarten screening appointments (September 14 and 15) for those who have selected In Person Learning this semester. Screenings will be held outdoors, weather permitted (and in the gym, if it rains). Additional information will be provided when appointments are scheduled.
For families who have opted for Distance Learning, kindergarten screenings will take place virtually. Screening appointments will be made (for September 14 - 16)
Kindergarten families should reach out to Mrs. Duarte at kduarte@epschoolsri.com to facilitate kindergarten screenings.

In Closing....
We are fortunate to have a committed school community that focuses on our students', families', and staff's well-being. It is even more critical and necessary this year that we are patient with one another, kind, caring, and supportive.
Please know that we are committed to providing every student at Silver Spring Elementary School, whether in person or engaging in distance learning with an opportunity to meet his/her greatest success. With your help, this will be possible!
As always, thank you for your continued support, partnership, and patience.
