There are so many similarities!
Because some of the symptoms of COVID-19 and seasonal allergies are similar, it may be difficult to tell the difference between them, and you or your child may need to get a test to confirm your diagnosis. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-seasonal-allergies-faqs.html
If you child has a history of seasonal allergies, please talk to your child’s doctor about allergy symptom management.
AND to add to the challenge…there is also THE FLU and COMMON COLD to think about ! ! !
PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME if he or she is not feeling well.
PLEASE notify the school nurse of symptoms of illness. THANK YOU!

The following are guidelines for participating in Google Meets with teachers:
Be prepared, ready to learn. Have a designated work area (not bed) stocked with materials. Sit up straight in a work position. Make sure you get up on time, have breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, and be ready to learn.
Be prompt. Be on time or early for any Google Meet one-on-one session or lesson. Check your calendar the night before to review tomorrow’s schedule.
Common areas in your home are best. When participating in a Google Meet, it is best if you are in a common area of your home such as your living room, kitchen, or other common area.
Dress appropriately. Be fully clothed, no pajamas.
Mute yourself. When you arrive in the Google Meet, mute yourself. If a teacher asks a question or if you have a question, unmute yourself, but remember to go back on mute. Background noise is louder than you realize and is distracting. To mute yourself, click on the microphone icon on the video display.
Refrain from using the chat feature. Only use the chat feature when the teacher asks you to do so. When you do use the chat feature, only type comments that are relevant and appropriate.
Be respectful. Remember to be respectful at all times. Allow people time to speak, and do not talk over others. Think before speaking, your words should be on-task and kind.
Time to exit. Exit the chat once the meeting is over. Do Not use the meeting code to hang out with friends.
Family Members. Family members, who are on camera, should wear appropriate clothing and follow these guidelines. If you walk by the Chromebook, it will pick up your image. Also realize that your child is trying to listen to a teacher, so hold your conversations in another room if possible.
Background Noise and People. Appropriate language and images must be used when the student’s camera and microphone are on, as everyone in the Meet can hear and see you.
At the beginning of each school year students take an i-Ready placement test to help teachers understand what Math and ELA skills students have mastered and still need to learn. This is a computer based test that students took in order for teachers to begin their whole group and individualized instruction for In Person and Distance Learning students. When this test was administered in the classroom setting, the teacher was not allowed to help students in any way and it was done completely independently. The reason for this is this test is designed to measure what grade level skills students have mastered and what skills students need to practice and learn. This test is an adaptive test, which means that some questions may seem difficult or easy for your child, however depending if the questions are answered correctly or incorrectly the test will adjust to the student’s level. In Person students completed this assessment at school under their classroom teachers supervision. Distance Learning students completed this assessment independently at home.
The results of this assessment will provide your child with an individualized learning plan for the i-Ready program. It is also important information that your child’s teacher will use to plan instruction.
It is extremely important that students completed this test without any help, as assistance would interfere with assigning appropriate skill levels for your child, hindering your child’s progress. Also, your child’s teacher would expect that your child has mastered skills that they have not. Hence, teachers will carefully review the data and in the event of discrepancies with scores, teachers will be reaching out to families individually, to discuss the need to reset the child’s test and have the child retake the assessment.
Our teachers have posted material and resources that keep our lessons organized and you informed.
Please reach out to your child's teacher, if you have any questions regarding his/her Google Classroom.
Mrs. Avila and Mrs. Francescon also have Google Classrooms that include school wide information. Their class codes are listed below:

“ORANGE provides a powerful, visually compelling expression of solidarity,” said Paula Goldberg, Executive Director of PACER Center. “Whether it’s hundreds of individuals at a school wearing ORANGE, store owners offering ORANGE products, or a community changing a landmark to ORANGE, the vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, sending the supportive, universal message that bullying is never acceptable behavior.”
Distance Learners should email a photo of him/herself wearing orange and black to Mrs. Francescon at dfrancescon@epschoolsri.com.
Photos shared with Mrs. Francescon will be posted on our social media, such as Facebook.
No costumes please!
At this time, school photos will be taken in early 2021.
In Closing....
We are fortunate to have a committed school community that focuses on our students', families', and staff's well-being. It is even more critical and necessary this year that we are patient, kind, caring, and supportive with one another.
Please know that we are determined to provide every student at Silver Spring Elementary School, whether in person or engaging in distance learning with opportunities to achieve his/her potential. With your help, this will be possible!
As always, thank you for your continued support, kindness, partnership, and patience.
Have a great month!
