Greetings Silver Spring Families!
What an incredible school year! Although it is hard to believe that the 2020-2021 school year is over, it is incredible to remember all that was needed to start and continue the school year. Happily, everyone rolled up their sleeves and did the work that needed to be done. I am grateful for everyone's efforts and look forward ending this school year in a positive note.
Fortunately, our School Improvement Team has been busy planning end of year events that will bring our school community together. Please check out our calendar, list of events, and other information included in this newsletter. We don't want you to miss anything!
Thank you to our teachers, staff, and PTC for supporting our students and families, and thank you to our Silver Spring School families for helping to keep our students happy, healthy and safe!
If you have questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher(s), our Secretary, Social Worker, Psychologist, Dean or myself. We are here to help!
We launched our new school website last month. The website is in addition to this newsletter, and our current website, which includes posting from our Facebook page and our school calendar. The hope is that you will find information that you are looking for in any and/or all of these sources.

Be respectful to one another and to staff.
Help to ensure the safety of all children and adults.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Attending school each day either in person or virtually is an integral part of your child's success.
Please ensure your child is rested and ready for school each day.

Our new Student Recognition Program, Silver Spring Stars, that recognizes students for improvement or excellence in attendance, achievement, participation, and kindness is well underway.
Students are being awarded stars and prizes, and are being entered in monthly raffles in which they have an opportunity to win additional prizes, along with their teacher and parents/guardians.
Please watch our weekly videos that are shared with you in the Bitmoji Classroom. The videos include announcements, Silver Spring Stars, Roadrunners of the Month, birthday shoutouts, special guests, and much more.
The videos and Bitmoji Classroom can be found in Mrs. Avila's Corner Google Classroom Class Code: yqexsfo
This will include taking students' temperatures and completing a secure form in Skyward.
Students, please remember to bring a water bottle to school (or even two water bottles) to ensure you stay hydrated during the school day. Your body and brain needs water!
Please be aware that there are several isolation and quarantine guidelines approved by the RIDOH.
Quarantine for Students Identified as Close Contacts: If students are identified as close contacts, they will have 10 days of quarantine with 4 days of surveillance of symptoms at least twice a day (total of 14 days). The surveillance/ monitoring of symptoms is to be done by parents/guardians at home; once before leaving for school and once prior to bedtime. A COVID test is not required, however, it is recommended.
“Close Contact” criteria: less than 6 feet distance for more than 15 minutes (cumulative) over 24 hours during the COVID positive person’s infectious period.
“Infectious Period” criteria: 2 days prior to symptoms in symptomatic person; or 2 days from test date for asymptomatic person.
Remember that I am always here to answer your questions regarding common childhood diseases, as well as COVID related illnesses. Please reach out to me via phone, email or dojo with any questions or concerns.

Updated Guidance:
With evolving changes to COVID guidance through the CDC and RIDOH,
The district has made a few changes.
Masks: All students and staff may remove their masks while they are outside for recess. Students will be required to maintain six feet social distancing while outside without a mask.
Stay Safe, Stay Happy, Stay Healthy!
We have about 4 weeks left of this school year and many are excited about the transition to summer time. Some children may also have additional feelings that occur with transition, such as worry or apprehension. To support a smooth transition, try to maintain consistent routines throughout the end of the school year, such as a consistent bedtime/routine, a consistent homework routine, etc. Try to encourage good sleep, a healthy diet, regular routines to support school work, etc., as well as finding time for social outings, physical exercise and time for family.
If your student struggles to maintain a positive attitude or is tired from all their hard work, and ready to end the school year, try giving them an affirmation to say each day. Here are some examples of affirmations that you can use with your child:
“I work hard every day and enjoy learning new things”
“I enjoy seeing my friends each day and playing with them at recess”
“I work hard in school and have many people who help me learn”
Tips for affirmations:
They are positively phrased
They are worded in the present moment (avoid starting them with “I will”, as this puts the affirmation into the future)
Repeat them often
We have faced many challenges this year and also had many successes. Remember to focus on those small successes each day and enjoy each moment, as we transition into the summer season.
Hello Townie Families! We know that this school year is different on so many levels. As the year progresses and the Covid related restrictions remain, we want to provide you with some activities that are fun, engaging, family focused and safe while also attending to the social-emotional needs of our children (and adults too!). Each month, different activities will be added to this site (www.smore.com/209gp-taking-care-of-you?ref=email) and will remain here for you to access at your convenience. While they are merely suggested activities, we do hope you enjoy them and that they help you and your family through the coming months!

It is so important for all of our students to consistently particpate in Google Meets, as they focus on core instruction.
Students who continuously miss a morning and/or afternoon Google Meet is missing core instruction in ELA and/or math, which will lead to learning loss. Please make every effort to ensure that your child follows his/her teacher's schedule and attends all Google Meets with their camera on and microphone off.
The following are guidelines for students participating in Google Meets with teachers:
Be prepared, ready to learn. Have your materials ready and sit up straight in a work position.
Be prompt to Google Meet lessons.
Common areas in your home are the best place to work.
Dress appropriately.
Turn your camera on.
Mute yourself when you arrive at the Meet and unmute when your teacher asks you to.
Be respectful at all times.
Exit when the meet is over.
Family Members who are on camera should use appropriate language and be appropriately dressed when in the background. Remember that everyone in the Google Meet can hear and see you.
Family members should refrain interrupting the lesson and should reach out to the teacher after the Meet, if there are any questions/concerns.
The replacement cost for one of our new Lenovo Chromebooks is $241.
