Greetings Silver Spring Families!
The last quarter of this school year is well underway as we approach the end of the school year.
In addition to working on academic, special subject and SEL assignments, our third, fourth and fifth grade students have completed this year's ELA Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS) assessments, our fifth grade students completed their Rhode Island Next Generation Science Assessment (RINGSA), and our third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be engaging in the math RICAS assessments this month. The testing schedule can be found in this newsletter. Please continue to ensure that our students get plenty of rest the night before their assessments, their Chromebooks are charged, and they come to school ready to do their best on their tests! We are confident that our students will continue to put forth great effort, take their time, and do their best.
During the first week of May we are celebrating our teachers and staff for Teacher Appreciation Week. Our teachers and staff have continued to work hard and do their best to help our students learn and grow. Please take a few moments to thank a teacher and staff member for all that they have done and continue to do for our school community. May is the month in which we celebrate our Nurse Maria Fazioli, for Nurse's Day! Nurse Maria has been involved at the district level and school level ensuring the safety and well-being of our school community members. Please take a few moments to thank Nurse Maria for the care and assistance she has provided during these most challenging times.
We also have have events planned for the month of May and June.
In May we are having Books & Breakfast, Incoming Kindergarteners' Orientation, a Science Fair, and a Spring Concert in which Chorus and Band will perform. In June we will be celebrating our kindergarteners with a Kindergarten Picnic and our fifth graders with a Grade 5 Promotion Ceremony. The dates and times of these events can be found in this newsletter.
This school year is quickly coming to a close. Although it has been a challenging year, it has been a productive one in which everyone has and continues to work hard and do their best.
Thank you for continuing to partner with us. The work that we do is important because our students are important!
Please remember to regularly check your child’s backpack, Class Dojo, and read this newsletter and emails to ensure you are up-to-date with what is going on at our school.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself, teachers, or staff. We are here to help!
Thank you for your continued support and kindness. Please know that we all appreciate it!
Have a great month!

The week of May 2nd is Teacher Appreciation Week!
Thank you to our PTC for helping to celebrate our teachers and staff for their dedication to our students, especially through these most challenging times.
Please take some time during Teacher Apprecaition Week to thank a teacher and staff member for all of their hard work on behalf of our students.
Students can write a thank you note, draw a picture, etc. to show their teacher that they appreciation them.
We are fortunate to have such committed teachers and staff in our school community!
Thursday, May 12th is Nurse's Day!
Nurse Maria Fazioli works hard ensure our students are healthy and ready to learn. She also communicates with parents/guardians, as well as physicians to ensure students' medical needs are addressed.
Please take a few moments to thank Nurse Maria for taking such great care of us all!
We are very fortunate to have such a skilled nurse caring for our students each and every day.
The weather is warming up and there are more and more children who are enjoying the playground and park after school, which we are happy to see. We want our students to get fresh air and have opportunities to play with their friends.
Please remember that once students are dismissed to their parents/guardians, school personnel are no longer responsible for incidents that occur at the playground and/or park, which are both public and open to all community members.
We encourage parents/guardians to supervise their children during this time to ensure that their children are safe and having fun.
Thank you for helping to keep our students safe!
We know our students will do their best to show what they know.
They can do it!
Thank you for helping our students prepare for RICAS and NGSA assessments.
This is the last PTC meeting of this school year and it will be in person.
We are looking forward to seeing you!
Reach out to our PTC Preseident, Aly Laughlin, if you would like to help with events and/or if you have any questions regarding the PTC.

As you know, it is a challenge to know for sure if signs/symptoms of illness are COVID or non COVID related. Home tests are a great tool to have handy if your child wakes up with symptoms. Home Test resources are listed below.
Please also inform the school nurse if your child is showing signs of illness. (Negative home tests need to be confirmed with a school test.) Thank you for staying safe!
COVID Home Test Kits
Where can I get a free COVID-19 self-test kit?
Federal Government kits: All Rhode Islanders can order free COVID-19 self-test kits directly from the federal government. To learn more, visit covidtests.gov.
Local Pharmacies:You can buy or order test kits from local pharmacies and through online retailers. Most health insurers are required to cover the cost of up to eight tests per month. Check with your insurance company or pharmacist to see how you can get reimbursed or if you need to file a claim. Often, reimbursement is immediate and a claim is not required.

In May we focus on the # 7 Habit for Successful Silver Spring Stars
7. Healthy Eating
The foods you eat are either fighting disease or feeding it. In addition to the foods we select, timing our meals can also have a positive (or negative) impact on our health. Snacking is often working against us. Read the facts here.
You can also check out this short video (Less than 2 minutes!)
The Seven Habits for Successful Silver Spring Stars were created to help improve attendance. One of the best attributes about Silver Spring is the strong teachers who LOVE teaching and students who LOVE learning... If they are not here we cannot teach them.
Students must be present 90% of the time in order to be in good standing by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Currently, we've been in school 75 days. If a student has been absent 6+ days, they are considered chronically absent by the RIDE. (Quarantine absences are not factored into this number.)
Families should make every effort to get students to school every single day. If a student takes days off for vacations or birthdays, and later needs to be quarantined, the absences add up quickly. If there is an appointment, please attend school before and/or after.
We are here for you. Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Francescon
on Class Dojo or email DFrancescon@epschoolsri.com
Each student is assigned a Chromebook once the student has returned the signed Acceptable Use Policy: Computer, Technology, Internet and google for Faculty, Staff and Students Instruction - Instructional Resources and Materials page and the Chromebook Loan Agreement page.
These and other documents can be found at the District's website: https://epschoolsri.org/parents/
Silver Spring School currently has 19 students on the chronically absent list. While there are obstacles this year due to the pandemic, we can do better. Our students are growing academically and socially every day, and we want to help them build their confidence and resilience.
Please reach out if you need help getting your child to school everyday. We are here to help.
Students who arrive on time report to their class line and and they will be escorted into the school by their teacher.
Students who are late report to Door No. 1 with an adult who will need to sign the student. The student will be escorted to his/her class by a staff member.
With Summer vacation coming up, many children find themselves with unstructured time that is often filled with various electronic devices. Screen time for youth has increased dramatically since the beginning of the pandemic and many children may have developed unhealthy habits around their use of devices. Here is a link to a website that outlines research around the levels of screen time that older children and teens are using. It provides links to resources on teaching children to safely use internet-connected devices as well.
If you want to know more about your child’s use of screen time or want to help them develop healthy habits for their screen time use, here is a link to some guidance in having those conversations:

While everyone will be receiving free breakfast/lunch this school year, we are still encouraging parents/guardians to fill this application out. In particular, it will help parents/guardians for the first month of school in September 2022. If students qualify for free/reduced lunch now - that will continue on through until for the first 30 days of school - roughly the second week of October.
We are collecting Peanut Butter and Tooth Brushes for the month of May
Because of the great response to the Feinstein Jr. Scholar Golden Ticket promotion, Mr. Feinstein has decided to continue drawing winning numbers through summertime school vacation!
Winning numbers will continue to be announced every Monday on WPRI Channel 12 during their prime time 4:30 p.m. news program and repeated the following day on our Facebook and Virtual Club.
Please keep your ticket in a safe place and check your ticket each week to see if you and our school are winners!
If you have a winning ticket, present it to Mrs. Avila and she will take a photo of your child holding the winning ticket and send the photo to Mr. Feinstein. Mr. Feinstein will then make a donation to our school and present your child with a check to donate to charity.
We could all be winners!
