Leadership

In Leadership students learn to be socially responsible and productive individuals within a larger society, and within the school community.

Leadership class prepares students for their futures as valuable citizens. Our Leadership students are provided with various opportunities such as, but not limited to: community and school involvement, organizing initiatives, and building a stronger, richer school culture.

Throughout the year, our leadership students develop a stronger sense of self, and the skills to truly lead, as they work at developing our school community. This helps to set a clear path toward successful futures!

Take a look at some of the activities that Leadership students participate in throughout the year.

Elementary school visits

During the course of the year we always schedule in time to take our leadership classes to the local neighbourhood elementary schools. Here our students get to put the skills and qualities discussed in class into action! Students love the opportunity to work with kids in earlier grades. An advantage of Killarney is that both Glengarry and Mee-Yah-Noh are walking distance from our school.

Our leadership group knows that the jump from elementary can be a big step and that's why beyond these visits we make sure to work with our grade 6 classes. Providing time to tour our building, learn about our school culture and provide insight into the junior high experience is something our class takes really seriously. We want everyone to feel at safe and at home when they become Kodiaks!

Glengarry Elementary School

Edmonton Food Bank

We have a proud partnership with the Edmonton Food Bank and annually collect non-perishable items for those in need in our community. It is an excellent opportunity for our school to come together for the benefit of those in need. We understand the importance of giving back and this initiative means so much to so many. In recent years Killarney was able to raise over 10,000 items! A feat so impressive that Global News published a story on our school and Leadership group.

Spirit Days & Special Events

#respecttheclaw #wearekodiaks #kodiaknation

We know the importance of building school community and culture. So much of the memories made in Junior High happen outside the classroom. The special days, school initiatives and community engagement events go so far to make your Junior High years memorable. Our Leadership group is at the heart of this, having full control over the days and activities we organize. At Killarney we understand the importance of making school exciting and fun. Students in this Leadership class will take part in the planning, implementing and running of these activities!

Highlights from years past include - Pink Shirt Day, Pumpkin Carving Contests, Hat off for Mental Health, Gingerbread House Competition, Flower Sales in February, Intramural activities at lunch and of course Friday Pizza Sales.

Honestly there is so much more we could share here. Check out our Instagram @killarneyjhs for even more content. Give us a follow to stay up to date with everything going on here at Killarney Junior High!

Leadership Summit at M.E. LaZerte

Going to the M.E LaZerte High School annual Leadership Summit is always a highlight for our students. Classes get the chance to represent our school and community in a challenge against other Junior Highs. Our students are inspired as they meet students from all over the city and find out how they are attempting to make a difference in their community.

The last year our school was invited we were given the task of creating, running and organizing an impactful school event. Our group came together and organize a "Pie Your Favourite Teacher" event. We wanted to give back to mental health initiatives and running the event allowed us share some laughs get some amazing pictures and ultimately raise over 300 dollars in in the span of only 30 minutes! Lucky that here at Killarney are staff is so willing to get involved and have some fun - even if it means taking a pie to the face!

Grade 9 Farewell, Awards Night, and Open House

These events are major highlights from our school year for especially our grade 9 classes. Our Leadership group is at the forefront of planning, organizing and setting up for each of these memorable nights.

Our Awards ceremony which is hosted by our Leadership class follows our ACE motto and celebrates the achievements made by our students in grades 7, 8 and 9.

Our open house event is largely student led as it's an opportunity to meet the next generation of Kodiaks. Our Leadership group volunteers on this night taking photos, selling spirit wear, greeting guests and participating in classroom demonstrations and labs. Its always a fun day for those attending and we look forward to being able to run this event again soon!

Finally, our grade 9 farewell is always a bitter sweet day. This night is organized by our Leadership 9 group and is the prefect way to cap off the school year. Leadership students have full control over decorations, theme, presentations and the speeches delivered on this night.
