Field Trips

Field trips are a crucial part of any junior high students educational experience. Our staff at Killarney recognize this and aim to offer a variety of enriching experiences that connect to your child's learning and create memorable learning experiences with their class mates.

Fort Edmonton Park

Grade 7s enjoy our social field trip to Fort Edmonton Park. This trip helps our study of the Canadian fur trade come alive. At Fort Edmonton students engage history with a tour, indigenous games, and making bannock. Students have an opportunity to touch furs and see what would be available in a Hudson Bay trading store. This living historical monument is an excellent way for our students to connect with history and culture of the city they live in.

Muttart Conservatory

Grades 7s spend a day at the Muttart Conservatory - applying their math skills in a real-world setting. This field trip includes number concepts, area and perimeter, and statistics. It provides a great setting for students to see how math can be applied in nontraditional settings. At the same time students enjoy learning about plants that grow in different climates around the world!

Jurassic Forest

In a cross curricular endeavor grade 7 math and science students head north of Edmonton to the famous Jurassic Forest. This exciting place gives students the opportunity to see life-like dinosaurs and fossils, part of their science 7 studies on Planet Earth. Students participate in a scavenger hunt that promotes learning while having fun.

Telus World of Science

The Telus World of Science is a hallmark fieldtrip of any junior high experience. Students have the opportunity to engage in science-related activities that connect to what they are learning in the classroom. Through out junior high they will return to explore both permanent and touring exhibitions. Participating in the Telus World of Sciences Maker Space center is always a highlight for our students. Of course, they also enjoying watching an IMAX documentary or spending time in the planetarium.

Strathcona Wilderness Center

The Strathcona Wilderness Center is a popular place for our students to enjoy the natural habitat that surrounds much of Edmonton. In Gr 7 Science students spend the day at the Wilderness Center enjoying a game of Predator-Prey in the woods. Students also enjoy discussions centering on the wildlife indigenous to the area. This park is a popular spot for many summer and winter activities enjoyed by our outdoor education program as well.

Marl Pond

Math 7 Students spend the day at a nature reserve collecting data to be analyzed mathematically. Students create circle graphs and calculate mean, median, and mode in relation to the fauna at the reserve.

Royal Alberta Museum

A trip to the new, modernized Royal Alberta Museum is always fun. Students connect displays with the Interactions and Ecosystems Unit in Science. Students enjoy first-hand observation of invertebrates and learn about their habitats and needs for survival.

Valley Zoo

Students spend the day visiting different animals at the zoo. They participate in programs that highlight animal adaptations to their environment, basic needs of the animals, and an animal’s niche.

U of A Observatory

Students who decide to participate in this field trip spend an evening at the University of Alberta. They are given the opportunity to view the cosmos through telescopes. Students learn about reflecting and refracting telescopes in Science 8.

Goldbar Wastewater Treatment Plant

Students are given a tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant to see first-hand how our city treats its sewage, before being released as effluent in the river. Students are learning about chemicals released into the environment and methods to remove them. This is a great field trip for our Environmental Chemistry Unit.

Prairie Gardens

Students spend the day at the Prairie Gardens - applying their math skills in a real-world setting. This field trip includes number concepts, surface area and volume, and statistics. While doing math, students enjoy playing outdoor games, go-karts, riding a small train, and playing outdoor chess. We also have a fire pit for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows

Bird Sanctuary

Students spend the day at a bird sanctuary collecting data to be analyzed mathematically. Students create circle, bar, line, and picto-graphs, as well as calculate mean, median, and mode in relation to the birds at the reserve. We have an outdoor picnic and students can watch and observe the various species of birds that frequent the sanctuary.

Galaxyland

This is a field trip that is much anticipated by our Grade 9 students, annually becoming a highlight of their year. Students spend the day at Galaxyland applying their math skills in a real-world setting. This field trip includes exponents, surface area and volume, scale diagrams and transformations, and rational numbers. While doing math, students enjoy going on the rides with their classmates. Students bring a bag lunch or eat in the food court adjacent to Galaxyland.

RiverWatch

Riverwatch is another exciting trip for our Grade 9 students. Students boat out in canoes or rafts and perform water testing from the North Saskatchewan River. They measure dissolved oxygen, turbidity, bioindicator species, pH, etc. Students have a lot of fun canoeing and enjoying the outdoors and learning about our river valley ecosystem

Law Courts

A highlight in Social 9 is our field trip to the Law Courts building. During this field trip students experience the serious nature of the building by entering through security but then are able to observe a variety of court cases in progress.

Sun Ridge Ski Trip

Killarney usually has two ski field trips each year - one in the fall and one in winter. These field trips are open to anyone from beginners to the well seasoned. The trip provides students with a ski lesson and the opportunity to ski for several hours afterwards, honing their winter sport skills.
