Art

In Art students focus on how to use the elements of design to explore their creativity through a variety of mediums. Our students are challenged to improve their skill no matter where they are starting at in order to create artwork that they can identify with and are proud of. Some of the things we focus on in the program are:

  • Acrylic painting techniques through pointillism

In Careers students are encouraged to explore a variety of resources that match their personality and learning styles to assist them in planning their futures and understanding the relationship among career planning, career decisions and lifestyles. The focus of Careers is to assist students in goal setting, planning their educational career, developing practical job acquisition skills, and exploring possible career options.

Computers

Computer Studies is a course that focuses on online and desktop programs, as well as using robotics to extend student knowledge. Students plan, design, create, and implement solutions for relevant real-life problems. No matter how much knowledge students enter the course with, they will be challenged with where they are at. Some activities include:

  • Coding & Gaming (classic and current)

  • Graphic Design

  • Animation

  • Advanced Google Suite Skills


Construction

In Construction we focus on providing an opportunity for students to respond to a variety of challenges as well as to demonstrate an ability for both independent and collaborative work in design, and construction learning activities. Goals of the course include to:

  • Developing an ability to research & lay out a design, plan for materials,

  • Familiarize themselves with safe hand tool and power tool use & practice.

  • Effectively carry out a plan of action, and to safely work with others while in the class

  • The course is designed for students to meet these objectives through a variety of projects such as building birdhouses, to bookshelves, to benches.


Discovery & Inquiry

Discovery & Inquiry give students an opportunity to practice the fundamental skills that are necessary for the workforce; These skills include but are not limited to planning, adapting, problem solving, collaboration, and independent work. Students are encouraged to demonstrate perseverance in response to a challenge and develop an inquiring mindset into the projects that they explore. Projects often come from the STEM approach and may include:

  • Popsicle Stick Bridges

  • Pringle Ring Challenge

  • Marshmallow Tower

  • 3D Printing

Drama

An education in Drama is and education in yourself! This year, you will begin to discover your potential as a performer in a variety of theatre disciplines to open you up to the possibility of theater as well as enhance your public speaking, self-esteem, and confidence. The more open minded you are to tackle any and all challenges presented in class, the more you will learn about yourself as an actor and an individual.

Foods

Killarney’s Food Program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore their culinary skills. They learn the basics of cooking and cleaning in the kitchen in a team atmosphere. They make recipes that include desserts, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Students enjoy competing in competitions such as, best decorated cupcakes, best cookies or best desserts. Program focuses include;

  • Food Safety

  • Appliance use & safety

  • Understanding ingredients & measurements

Outdoor Education

In Environmental Outdoor Education students learn skills and techniques to safely explore seasonal activities in a variety of different indoor and outdoor spaces. Through this fun activity based class, students participate in a variety of field trips both in and around Killarney School and Edmonton. Some of the past activities have included:

  • Canoeing & Fishing at Hermitage Lake

  • Cross-Country Skiing, Snow shoeing, & Fire lighting at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre

  • Rock Climbing at Vertically Inclined

  • Mountain Biking and Archery at Victoria Park

  • Broomball/Ringette at Glengarry or Killarney Community Arena's

  • Swimming at O'Leary Pool

Sports Performance

In Sports Performance, students are tasked with analyzing fitness goals, designing a fitness plan, and then executing that plan.

While we work in the fitness center, the students learn to:

  • Be self-motivated,

  • Follow safety expectations

  • Manage their time to complete their personalized training plan.

While we work in the gym, students are required to

  • Research, analyze goals and interest to create a plan that will help them work toward refining specific skills in a sport of their interests.


Tourism & Hospitality

This option class is absolutely exciting. Students begin by learning about the Ancient Wonders of the world and the Modern Wonders of the world. This is followed by an exploration of the 20 most common languages spoken worldwide, and a look at local phrases specific to certain areas. Students then research and learn about Celebrations on all five continents; such as the Mardi Gras in Brazil, and the South Indian Fire walking Festival in Fiji. A look at National Animals, endangered animals, and rare and unusual animals and plants is studied.

  • This option provides students with the opportunity to learn interesting things about other countries and make connections between people abroad and Canadians.

  • Students will complete a series of assignments including tourism posters and a research project on a country that they are interested in.
