Guiding Question: How can volume characterize space?
It is the amount of 3D space an object occupies.
We measure volume in cubes.
cm³ (cubic centimeter): a cube that is 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm
m³ (cubic meter): a cube that is 1 m x 1 m x 1 m
Think of a rectangular prism as a "3D array."
Find the area of the base (length x width).
Multiply that by the height (area x height). This is like stacking layers of cubes on top of each other.
The Formula: volume = length x width x height
If you take a shape made of 20 cubes and rearrange them into a different shape, the volume is still exactly 20 cubes.
