CAS Visual Art Standards

1.1. Utilize the inquiry method of observation and the language of visual art and design to gather information and determine meaning.

Project Requirements:

• Brainstorm a theme using a big idea as a starting point

• Research, plan, and design a tic tac toe game board and pieces

• Watch videos and take notes about slab building

• Create a tic tac toe board and container using the slab method

• Create 10 playing pieces (5 of each) 

• Use glaze to complete your board and pieces

• Document the process with pictures and written reflections

Creating your Tic Tac Toe Board 

1. Draw an image of your box/container with dimensions (height, width, length - circumference and height if round)

2. Roll out slabs and cut necessary pieces (top, bottom, sides)

3. Store slabs in a plastic bag with one piece of newspaper in between each piece)

4. When slabs are leather hard, arrange the pieces like they will be put together 

5. Using an exacto knife, push the edge of the slab flush against the table and cut at a *45 degree angle

6. Score and slip ALL the edges that will be joined and let dry to late leather hard stage

7. Use cheese grater to remove extra clay from box

8. Use rib tool to smooth out surfaces

9. Use a pin tool to map out where you will cut to create a top and bottom

10. Use an exacto knife to cut the top and bottom apart

11. Smooth out new edges

12. Add details, and other designs to finalize your box
