Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
● More materials individually tested as they have arrived (Miles and Garrett):
○ Heat hardened neoprene
○ Carbon fiber fabric
○ Stainless steel meshes (60, 80, 120)
○ High density EVA foam
● Successful attempt at sewing a sock using only neoprene (Ho)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
● Comprehensive combination material testing (Garrett and Miles)
● Beginning shoe designing and testing (Jordan and Ho)
● Will need to regularly switch back and forth between picking materials and designing shoes due to the difficulty of constructing shoes with certain materials (Entire team)

● Potentially consult a cobbler to help create prototypes out of the materials we’re testing
● Try redesigning the pendulum material holder so we could test impacts at angles other than 90o
● A prototype with the fewest moving parts might be ideal
● Make a prototype that is the material duct taped or glue together concurrent with testing
● Put your foot in the “prototype” and walk around in water. Drag and functionality will be quickly apparent, as well as comfort.
● Try any weirder material options (sponge?)
● To prepare for deflecting a barb when directly stepped on we would need a smooth, non porous material, not a fabric-like material.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
● Waterproof vs. keeping sock on, neoprene is thin and comfortable but materials that might be puncture resistant are likely not gonna be stretchy or comfortable
● Scales - manufacturing
● Protomold - soft aluminum molds
● Material for top of the sock vs. material on the bottom
Risks and Areas of Concern
● Lack of access to pools means rough prototype socks must be tested at the ocean, adding time to each testing cycle
