● Stingrays regrow barbs if they dislodge or get old

○ Testing the Level IIA Kevlar against various knives. Knives used are the Opinel Eff 12 knife, AKM bayonet knife, Mtech Marine knife and the Lee Enfield Spike bayonet.
○ Kevlar 2a protects against many small bullets and would be used in a bullet proof “shirt” so it is likely to have the flexibility we need to make a shoe

Accomplishments from Previous Week
● Brainstorming stingray sting deterrents, we have come down to two main paths with multiple routes:
○ Water Shoe:
■ Needs more research into puncture-resistant materials
■ Kevlar?
○ Stingray Repellant:
■ Stingrays can hear, see, and sense electrical (magnetic) fields, meaning there may be possible routes of repelling stingrays altogether
■ Our “Wow” design would be a simple yet effective deterrent, as it protects both the user and the stingray
● Material setup involves a testing setup with stingray barbs as
Figure below.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
● Contacting those who have access to stingrays/stingray experts (Scripps) (Garrett’s and Miles)
○ Catching stingrays to test repellent methods if that option does not pan out (Jordan and Garrett)
● Continue brainstorming more possible methods to avoid stingray stings, becoming more specific (Ho)
● Building the puncture test setup (Garrett’s and Miles)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
● Focus less on the marketability of deterrents (advice is taken already, last on our list of concerns)

Risks and Areas of Concern (i.e. show stoppers)
● Lack of information/tests regarding methods for deterring stingrays
● Being able to find stingrays to test repellents on
○ Being able to catch stingrays during this time of year
○ Captive stingrays not easily accessed
● Some of the best materials for a water shoe may be difficult to acquire and/or work with
Risk reduction and milestone
●Settle on a design and perform puncture tests
●Regularly redesigning and performing puncture tests to improve design
●Perform design test with stingrays
●keep trying to catch stingrays
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
amount spent $0
