Activity 4
A Data Case Study
Connections:
There is so much that students can do with data, but we really want to think about how they can use data to make decisions about their prototype in this engineering experience. Now, we are going to look at how analysis and interpretation can be used to help students determine the best solution based on the criteria and constraints that were identified in the experience.
Objective(s):
- Develop the strategies to teach students to use, analyze, and interpret data to inform decisions.
- Set up tests designed to evaluate the design outcome against criteria. Click on the purple icon below to view the course content.
“The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” ~ Henry Ford
We know that we can learn so much from our mistakes. Students need to know that during engineering, they may make mistakes and it’s OK because it's a great learning opportunity. Consider Mrs. O and how she did not prevent students from orienting their papers incorrectly because she knew it would provide a valuable learning opportunity during the data discussion.
In your Bite-size Experience Team, imagine the possible discussion that Mrs. O might have with students about mistakes and opportunities to learn. Create a short conversation as you consider the discussion between Mrs. O and students as Mrs. O emphasizes the learning opportunities that might occur when mistakes are made -- especially during the prototype testing during the engineering process.
Create a comic strip featuring that conversation. You might use one of the following tools or take a photograph of a comic strip drawing:
Save your comic as a .png or .jpeg file.
Visit the Mural Workspace. Add your comic image to the workspace, making sure your team members' names are all listed.

Reflection:
How might you use comic strips and comic strip creators in your classroom?
